    First time servicing my Disco

My Disco is a May '97 V8 and it needs an oil and filter change. It will be a crawl-under job and on the weekend I managed to locate a huge sump oil catcher which should help to keep the garage floor clean. But I need help with the sump plug gasket and an oil filter, especially the filter. Presumably after market is cheapest and I have looked at the R%@o site and studied the numbers in the book at the el cheapo auto shop but they don't seem to match. I could have screwed that up though. In addition, I need to know the ID of sump plug gaskets and the metal they are made of too.
My old car has been with me since new and has had a small variety of mechanics. The last one installed a red oil filter. That's all I can tell you. There is no brand that I can see. If this can be carried out successfully there are all sorts of things that need doing but this will keep it going for 6 months at least. In the past all I have worked on is my motorcycle but it is hibernating while I have been recuperating. At any rate, I am reasonably proficient with tools.

    Thank you in advance

Don't worry about the copper washer under the sump plug, mine has been re used for the last 5 years and still does not leak, its just another con from mechanics that it needs replacing every change.
As far as filters go just go to repco or the like and ask for a D1 V8 ryco filter, some crap mechanics use a Z9 on the rovers but the oil pressure will drop slightly so use the correct filter. Z89A from memory, should be about 17.00

I generally just buy a service kit from Roverlord here. You know you're getting proven quality parts, they arrive within a couple of days, and include the new copper washer. Also includes a fuel filter and air filter, and, if you want, a filter and gasket for the auto. Plus they are long-time supporters of this forum.

I, too, have re-used plug washers, but if they're available, I'll use a new one.

When you use a new copper washer, your sump plug will be the only oil free part of the engine. 😂

You should not use Z9 as they are longer in length and supposedly at full articulations they can get ripped off

Not with the v8. Z89a is a better fit tho.
Last few rycos that I used, I had problems with the drain back valves.....

First ryco I used on the v8 I done it up hand tight like I do on all my cars. Started er up and it was pouring out the seal and fast too. I had to do it up with the wrench another 2 full turns I was pretty surprised. No big deal it's not overtight, but it's not leaking now so all's good.

Did it have a gasket? Forget it and filters can leak.

Without a gasket, tightening would not stop the leak. More likely would be the old gasket remaining stuck to the mount and you ending up with two. Even more likely is that the thread was a little tight for some reason. I use Ryco for most servicing mainly because they are easier to get through Bursons and they do need to be tightened 2/3 of a turn after contact as advised.
