200TDI head gasket

Another thing that bugs me are these triangular holes in the block and head gasket that have no corresponding hole in the head. The coolant is eroding a hole. Why have them?
The gasket could be left entire there.
I will clean out the erosion with a Dremmel then fill with epoxy, then fill the gap in the gasket with silicone, excess can squeeze down into the water gallery.
Should stop that eh?

No hole is the thickest on a 300 tdi.
Dont know if they do it for the 200

Never seen the head eroded like that. Something was messed up with the coolant. The proper gaskets have sealant around those holes.

Gasket thickness does not fix the issue. The gasket thickness is set so the piston just clears the head. If you go thicker the compression ratio is all wrong.

The heads are not really ever meant to be skimmed. Time for a new head.

New heads ure not available.
Some have used 300 heads but the pistons and other stuff need swapping also.

Gasket thickness would stop the valves hitting the pistons if thicker, letting the head be shaved a bit more.

sealant around the holes is for the coolant galleries, from memory the tgv version of the head has the holes for the coolant to flow through the head.

The piffling difference that the thickest gasket makes compared to the thinnest is well, marginally insignificant. It works out to something like .5cc per cylinder and last time I checked, when you want to really up the boost you lower the compression ratio.

The head eroding like that is typically caused by a low coolant concentration and electrolysis.

the TDI, after all is basically thermite, with an iron block waiting to rust and aluminium waiting to be freed from the alloy of the head and pistons by the heat of combustion, and tweaked hard enough the combistion temp and pressure is high enough to light it off.

Just looked on the website.
Both the standard and improved 200tdi heads are out of stock still.
