    200TDI head gasket

My engine has been pressurising the coolant for some time so I decided to tackle it because it locked up on starting after being left a couple of weeks.
It was leaking through no 3 to that coolant hole next to it.
Now the elring gasket did not come off easily, any tips on how to remove that hard black stuff off the block.
    The head was OK.
Does this mean it was stuck to the block with something?
Should I use Hylomar on the replacement gasket or leave it dry?

That is normal for a composite gasket to stick like that.
Use a scraper and razor blade to get the bulk off.
Finish with a sanding block and 400 wet and dry to polish it up.

Also the book says .01mm deviation on the head. My smallest feeler is .04 mm and it goes under a straight edge in a couple of places not near the combustion chambers. I am inclined just to bolt it back down with new Elring and new bolts.

You need to get the head surfaced.

dont use a ruler, use an engineers edge or if you have someone who has access to one mount the head in a mill a dTI in the tool holder and measure the deviance there.

if your smallest feeler is a 4 thou feeler get a better set of feelers.

the Composite Elrings dont need hylomar, the bare metal ones do. Defer to the instructions that come with the gasket for sealant but use the engine build data for the head bolt sequence and tension.

When you talk thou like me I mean inches so your 4 thou is inches but my measurement of .04mm was mm as thats the book measurement.. Thats .0015 inches. My feeler says 4 thou is 0.10mm
How much can be taken off the head as in whats the minimum distance from the valve head to the cyl head surface. I can get a .030 " or 0.75mm gauge in there.

    200TDI head gasket

The valve measurements are in the workshop manual. 0.030” is a lot. Your head may be toast.

    Found it in another manual.
35 to 40 thou so my 30 odd is not enough. As you say the head may be toast.
Why does someone not make thicker head gaskets, say 4 hole etc. Then we could plane a bit more off. The rest of the head is not bad, no cracks.

    MMMM two gaskets
