    flexible magnetic pickup tool?

    Flexible pickup tool
no idea if it'd fit inside the access hole into the pillar tho.

I guess if you had a strong magnet, you may be able to place it on the pillar, hope that the spring will be attracted to it and slowly bring the magnet up towards the access hole.
Dunno if that would work, as the pillar is metal(magnetic itself). Hope you don't have too much rust in there and bring that up instead!

Get another switch at Supercheap. I am pretty sure I have seen them on the Christmas tree stand with the nuts and bolts.

Some posters need to read the OP! The wire is copper, not likely to be magnetic! Get a short length of stiff wire, such as used on fencing, bend a hook into one end of it and just carefully fish for it. Had to do it many times. Cheers

I misread the OP . Ditto to hook.

Just make sure the battery is disconnected.

Of course! I was thinking the spring, as in the spring that pops the plunger back out.

I reckon the wire may be easier to pull back out as it wouldn't have fallen very far.
I've used a flexible grab tool and lots of hope to grab it and pull it up enough to grab with needle nose pliers back through the hole.
