I was wondering if you would even notice the ratio change when driving a 1.211 vs a 1.222?
Because i could rebuild the 1.222 case and theoretically the 300Tdi would highway cruise at a few revs lower...

Other way around .. lower ratio number lower revs .... higher number higher revs for a given speed.
Think of this way, low ratio is about 3.something to 1 .. higher number -> lower revs(in this case 1/3 lower speed, or 3x higher revs)
Depending on gearbox used(manual or auto) with the 1:1.211 ratio you'd drop your revs(at 100k/h) by about 20RPM(at nearly 2200RPM .. so as the ratio difference implies, basically about 1% change (0.01 difference in a value of 1 in percentage = 1%)
(therefore 1% of 2200 = 20-ish)
Just rough numbers there, not exacting!
ps. the differences between manual and auto, while actually different in final gearing, the differences will be minimal .. 1 RPM differences again at 2200/2300 engine speeds.
Had a quick peek for the 28D serial No's and it seems to be RRC transfer case, and IT should be the 1.222 ratio.
36D prefix should be late D1, and have the 1.211 ratio.
D2 prefixes are 41D and 42D. And same 1.211 ratio as D1.
According to Ashcrofts.
