98 D1 V8 auto shifter won’t move - shifter clip has come off

While attempting to reverse park into a car park in Dads MY98 D1 V8 (as my Td5 is currently in pieces while I replace the water and PAS pumps) I shifted from D to N and then could not shift any more.

Levered the top of the shift knob off to observe that when pushing the button the wedge piece would just slide up the rods shaft. I ended up removing it and using my fingers to pull the rod up allowing me to change gears.

Once home I pulled the button out of the knob and found an L shaped clip at the bottom (Google tells me it’s Land Rover part number TYC100070). It looks undamaged, but do they loose tension and so should I replace it to prevent future reoccurrence? How does this refit? Having not pulled it apart myself I’m unsure. It fits on easily with the small leg facing up but I don’t think that’s the right way as it’s not tight or secured in place. Microcat and a lot of the sources online show a different style of shift knob that uses an E clip instead.

I would replace with the appropriate size e clip. easy enough done. saying that perhaps the old clip could be tightened up with a squeeze of the pliers.

Used a flat blade screw driver and pair of pliers to get the clip back in place with the small leg of the L pointing downwards. I first bent it a bit so it was properly back to 90* bend to have tension, then used the screw driver to push it down while the pliers squeezed it on. Seems to be on tight and holding.
