    Radiator plug ERR4686

I have a 96 V8 3.9 engine, the radiator plug has decided to go to God, I see part No ERR4686 available but they only mention it is suitable for diesel engines, will this part also fit the radiator in a petrol engine.

    Yep!
Same plug as the top of the thermostat housing on a Tdi too.

Personally, I wouldn't use the (brass)plug type shown in 4Bees link, due to the limited grip you can get on it's two sides.
Not a problem getting them on, but can be problematic getting them off(after some time on). Don't need to tell you how I know this. I chucked mine in the bin.
You can get brass hex plugs that allow a normal socket to fit.
I couldn't get a genuine LR brass plug in the time I needed it(immediately!), but I went to a hydraulics specialist to get other bits and pieces for my gauges, and on the off chance asked if they had something to fit.

Also are the same plugs for diff(fillers) too.
Roverlord seems to have them in stock too on his ebay page. Contact him via here.
Before you buy tho, check to see if your diff fillers are plastic or brass too.
If plastic, change them. Again if they've been on for a while, can be a total pain to remove. Brass is better!
ie. you may actually need 3 of them in total.
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

The one I used also had a wide slot across the top & I sometimes used the edge of a Bastard File to tighten/loosen the plug.

Just how tight do you need to go to hold it securely in place ffs?

Next thing you know someone will be ripping the FM fitting out of the top plate. A 1 x wrap of Teflon Tape was all it needed to Belt & Braces it.

    As already said above.
I had to butcher mine to get it to come off, and that also involved getting the top section of the radiator frame off too.
Not a lot of work, but more than should have been required had it been the hex headed type.

ps. didn't know it had a torque setting either, but mine definitely needed a ton more than that to remove!

Seems a bit of the olde Teflon tape as a thread barrier would have gone a long way, Arthur.

Plug was on hard from previous owner(s).
All I tried to do was 'the right thing' in giving the old tdi a good flush out and all that kind of stuff.
Threads were OK and all that, just stuck on really hard, plus a chopped out pair of flats on that type of plug from previous bad attempts to fit/remove.

It is remarkable what some folk can achieve with a 36" Shifter.
