    Interesting noise from under Disco

    G'day all,

Just got this lil noise coming from under my Disco, it's a 96 D1.

Any ideas on what it could be, on a mechanical knowledge scale of 1-10 i'm a Hoovie's Garage.

Possibly clutch springs. My 300tdi made the same noise - intermittent and no particular pattern. Would sometimes be there when cold, other times not etc. Put your foot of the clutch and the noise will lessen.

I replaced all sorts of things looking for it. The rear welch plug went, so as the motor came out I put a new clutch, rear main seal and seal on the gearbox input shaft. The old clutch springs were nearly dropping out. Noise gone

    I know that sound!

I had the same noise from my old D2 V8 auto a few years ago. It could be your Flexiplate. I could only hear at idle in park or neutral.

Sorry for the bad news but it's either the engine or gearbox out to check.

Here's what mine looked like when I pulled the engine for a rebuild and upgrade to 4.6.

From memory there is a couple of inspection holes, you may be able to see through one of these, it won't tell you if its definitely not the problem, but it could tell you if it definitely is....

A borescope would be the go.

    Cheers
