Thread: Discovery 1 1997 V8 Oil Leak under Bell Housing

At a first guess I would say rear main seal is gone. I can't think of anywhere else it would be from in that location unless there is something leaking heavily above, should be pretty obvious.

Like all vehicles it's a bit of a nuisance job purely as the gearbox needs to come out to do it, but other that it's fairly simple.

Thanks will take a closer look up top at rocker cover bolts and valley etc and see if there is anything leaking. May be time again to check the breather and that little t piece that can get blocked.

Mate, fingers crossed you find something simple up top. They are good days! Hahaha.

Wind and gravity, and any leak would end up in this location. Give it a good clean where ever you see oil. While under there, snug up the sump pan bolts, they can leak a little. Then keep an eye on it. Also is it Auto transmission? front seals can go hard there. test oil when it re appears to be sure, auto fluid smells different.

Happy days. A closer look shows at least one oil leak contributing to the problem.
