    95 300Tdi Auto questions...

Hey all, first time poster here.

I'm looking at buying a disco series 1 and have found a good looking 95 auto in my budget (including leaving me some coin to get some lockers and a few other mods).

However I have heard that the ZF auto gearbox is prone to over heating and having issues when you push them off road.
I'm driving from Perth to Queensland in a couple of months to do the old telegraph track and some other fairly hectic 4WD tracks and because it will be pushed through its paces a bit (water crossings, mud, sand etc) I wanted to know if any of you have/had a 300Tdi with a ZF auto box and if you had any issues with it off-road??

If so, I am considering the option of an auto to manual conversion, but would rather avoid the cost and time needed to do so if possible.

    Thanks heaps in advance!

    Todd.

learn to drive it right, use low range, dont abuse the TC, manually lock it down if you have to and spin the engine faster then open up the gear range selection once you're past the change point

so long as the Injector pump hasnt had a lecture, the wastegate hasnt been given the shut up talking to and he tyres are stockish size you'll be fine.

just make sure its serviced well. (whole vehicle not just the box)

    Cheers Dave.

Do you think that's a downfall with the auto, having to manually lock it down and not open it up until you're past the change point?
A flaw that could lead to issues, or just something that's just part and parcel with driving a 300Tdi auto?

    Appreciate your comment mate.

Hey loanrangie, good to hear yours had no issues.

Did you have any mods specific to it being auto, like adding transmission oil cooling etc that's worth knowing about?
Also, did you put it through it's paces with challenging 4WD tracks?
For the most part I'll be doing pretty cruisey stuff, but this upcoming trip will be pretty hectic, so just want to make sure I'm/the vehicle is well prepared.

    Cheers heaps for your input!

    ALSO....

Worth noting that the car will be driving for about 10 hours solid each day, will this be an issue for the auto box?

Make sure it is using Castrol Transmax or Penrite fluid. Hopefully Rick will chime in soon.

you wont have any issues with the box ( or disco ) if it has been looked after , use penrite atf fs or as stated castrol transmax z when servicing the box.
The zf 4 hp 22 will easily cope with a tuned 300 tdi
