    300 TDI recon engine cost

Hi All. The motor in my 98 Disco 1 (300 Tdi) is cooked. I think she may be beyond economical repair. She is worth little. I have had her 15 years and would rather not send her off for an ignominious end on the scrap heap. Wondering what cost of recon engine (installed) would be. Anyone have any idea? I live in Perth.

Thanks All. As always, your help is appreciated.

    300 TDI REPAIR

    Hi,
here in South Africa my experience is so:
if you do the overhaul yourself ( with the job of an engineering firm added )
it is very economic and straight forward to rebuild a 300TDI.
Good quality spares - pistons/bearings/gaskets - is vital to success.
The nasty trick with a Disco 1 is the limited working space to remove the upper
    nuts of the bell-housing.
    The rest is easy!
I assemble the engine only partly before installation.
That way it easier to tighten the engine mountings.
Even the injector-pump is better installed with the engine in position.
Do not give up - it is worth the effort.
And do the timing with a clock - 1.5mm before TDC.
    Good luck!!!
    from Wilfried in SA

The nasty trick with a Disco 1 is the limited working space to remove the upper
    nuts of the bell-housing.
This can be made easy, remove engine mount bolts, lift engine very slightly, completely remove engine mounts, then lower to below normal position. upper bolts/nuts can then be accessed. support gearbox throughout.

I have just rebuilt a 300tdi. I was given a D1 that had been cooked. Pulling the motor out and putting it back in are the hardest part. The bore in mine was good, although it had a small lip at the top. I cut the lip out and honed the bores and it came up well. The motor had 400k on it. I had new pistons, but just used the old ones as they were, once cleaned and measured, in very good condition. So I have put all new seals, bearing, oil pump, thrust washers, rings, gaskets, head, rear main seal, spigot bearing etc in it for a cost of about $1,800.00. I had a hybrid turbo with only about 20k on it (I had it on my daily driver but replaced it with a VNT). I used a second hand set of injectors taken off of my daily driver that are in good condition, put new seals in the injector pump whilst it was off and fitted a new timing belt. Just waiting on new glow plugs for it and I will put it back in. If you have reco'ed a motor before, they are a simple motor to work on. Just get the 300tdi overhaul manual and it is a pretty good guide.

    Good luck with it.
    Tom.
