    Rear Step droop fix

The paramedics have just left after the heart attack I got when I saw the replacement price for the ram for the back step!!!

Searched too long for a better price but found this and was wondering if anyone has used it?

Have you tried some strong magnets?

    Genius

As always the simple solution is magnificent! See it working like a treat - any suggestion as to the magnets which no doubt need a hole in the middle.

There is also this place in Australia. save on postage. They don't list the rear step, but a lot have sizes given. may be a case of a bit of research.
cabinet struts are cheaper, not sure about how they would cope with the weather etc.

The magnet sounds like a great idea, simple spring added as well.

Then again, gas struts usually keep a door or bonnet open, the one on the step is to keep it closed??
so, I'm thinking of using a cheap 'door closer' as fitted to fly screen doors, adjustable and very cheap, about $10.00
just need to work out the fitting. hmm.

I don't reckon you'd need holes. Once stuck to chassis, or step steel area, highly unlikely they will ever come off themselves. Will be hard enough to prise off I reckon.

I know Jaycar have a selection, and I know Bunnings sell magnets(dunno what type).
Never really looked in depth into Bunnings types, ie. what type they are.
    Jaycar definitely have neodymium types.

What I got from Bunnings were magnets that have a magnet shaped like a donut(or toroid) with a chrome case with a hole in it. Hole itself didn't matter, I made a magnetic camera mount.
Got to be honest I can't remember how much, and what aisle. Don't think they were too exxy tho .. maybe max $10 ... or less. 2" diameter, maybe 5mm central hole. The chrome case is quite sturdy too .. maybe 2mm gauge too.

A couple of these could do the trick I guess.

EDIT: had a quick peek at online Bunnings.

Everhang 50mm magnetic base <- link

$5 each is definitely worth a shot I spose

I go through struts regularly on two work vehicles and have found if you go to a strut specialist, they are cheaper than OE. Also, getting them to re-gas struts is cheaper again.

    Yep!

And IIRC RRT lives in Travancore, which is not far from Gas Strut Engineering in Leo St, Fawkner(off Sydney Road).

I've had a few recharged by them, and decently priced for expensive to buy struts.
Back in the day with my SD1's/Vanden Plases .. the rears were notoriously unreliable. Quite large units, and a couple hundred dollars to buy a new per pair.
Can't remember exactly, but maybe less than $50 to recharge them.

Also note, if you remove your strut, Bunnings also have a small selection of struts too .. no idea on quality/strength tho .. never bought them.

Don't forget to check both the size and also rating in Nm, to be sure you have the correct struts.
