Strange find whilst changing 300tdi water pump

Im wondering if anyone here has come across this before?

I was changing out the water pump on my 300tdi the other day and found a brown plastic hose barb looking thing floating around in the bottom of the housing. I'm trying to figure out what it's come from and how the hell it ended up there.
It would explain the occasional rattlen or ticking noise that was coming from around there that's for sure.

Edit. Figured out picture posting, just had to force my phone to use desktop mode.

Going to sound ridiculous, but it resembles the end of a garden watering can.
maybe someone filling up and the end fell in the top hose.

I'm sure there is a better explanation,

Winner ! Thanks blknight. It's either the one from near the right angle or it's from a previous hose.

To be honest I was beginning to think foreign object, but glad I asked.

All hoses are about to be swapped out, along with the thermostat and timing belt.
