Something Missing or a Spare Connector?

    Hello All,

Well this weekend has inadvertently turned out to be a "Discovery Weekend" - on more than one level... Please bear in mind that I am much more familiar with Series Land Rovers...This is my first Discovery D or "modern" Land Rover. Ones with flash electrical bits!

During my "what is what" check today, I noticed a large empty space in the area between the brake master cylinder and the fuse box. Laying on the bottom of this area is a female four pin plug, a yellow wire and a white wire; that all end in close proximity to each other.

My thoughts are that something is missing. Or is it just a spare space to fit a future addition into with no specific usage intended? Can anyone enlighten me please?

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Unused plugs are common on newer cars. Cars come in many specs and for many various markets. It would be uneconomical and a logistical nightmare to produce different wiring looms for all of the variants. The spare parts inventory alone would be huge.
that said, I can’t say for certain that this is the case here. I’ll have a look at my D1 when I get home.

In your case previous owner has removed something.

That space is either empty (non-ABS) or has ABS unit depending on variant of vehicle.

Did the D1 have the ABS module on the driver’s side, Mike?

    Hello Tombie,

I am not sure if things changed with the positioning of the ABS module in July 1996 when my vehicle was made? However, there is a Wabco ABS system mounted on the passenger side just near the windscreen washer bottle. I have attached some more photographs of both sides of the vehicle showing what goes where. I hope these photographs are of some assistance?

Perhaps the positioning of the ABS module is similar to where the battery is positioned - depending upon which "Hand" drive market the vehicle is manufactured for?

However, with the yellow and white wires ending in bare terminals in approximately the same position as the female multiple pin plug suggests to me that something has been taken out by a previous owner. It would have been both handy and safer if they could have at least wrapped some insulation tape around the terminals! I don't like loose uncovered bare terminals!

    Kind regards
    Lionel

My 96 D1 with 300tdi has the ABS modulator on the passenger guard, but different years/motors etc may be different. My drivers side guard is empty.

    Cheers,
    Tom.

Sorry yes, ABS in front of washer bottle.

I relocated my jack to that side with a custom mount.
And added all my relays in the same area.
