electrical gremlins
Any electrical guru's out there?
3.9 V8 disco 1.
Driving home last night, all lights went out, no radio and the red battery dash light came on.
what was worse, I had windows down and it started to rain, yes, no windows worked.
Had no choice but to continue, runs fine, just snuck home by backstreets, but made it safely.
checked all fuses, battery connections etc. etc.
Started up today and everything worked as normal, so I can rule out a blown fuse at least.
10 minutes later it did it again.
What works;
1. engine starts and runs fine, drives normally.
2. indicators.
3. front windscreen wipers.
4. electric mirrors.
5. fob only unlocks drivers door.
6. hazard lights.
What does NOT work;
1. all lights, park, main, interior, dash.
2. all electric windows.
3. rear wipers.
4. radio and cig. lighter socket.
5. central locking on all doors (except drivers.)
6. Heater/air cond interior blower fan. and therefore no aircond turning on.
Out of ideas,
They all have individual fuses that are ok, is there a main that controls all those things not working.
I work nights so it's a pain, no fun riding a bike in winter rain.

There is a fuse box under the bonnet you could check. What about your earth? Is it a good strong connection. They can become loose or the wires can wear out due to vibration etc.
Well that's what I'd check first but I'm no expert.

Thanks for reply,
yes, all fuses pulled and reseated, including under bonnet. battery clamps cleaned etc.
Even did the earth straps, cleaned and tight.
Rain here for a while, so I bit the bullet and took it to Auto electrician.
here's where the gremlins struck, went out to show the sparky what was going on........turned key on and.. well,
everything worked again.
Hmm. while there he checked alternator was charging as the batt. light was on dash, but not now. All working fine.
We had a laugh, and it cost nothing. He did say if I've been driving in rain a lot, moisture may have effected something ??
Bring it back when it happens again.
I'll make sure windows are up in the meantime.
No doubt to be continued.

It's always the way. Take it to the auto elecs and the car is fine. It's happened to me before too.
My old D2 used to not start if you sprayed a high pressure hose at the grill! The only time it ever let me down was at two separate car washes
