Thread: Pulley bolt ERR5087

to me it looks like a M20x1.0

physical size:
Thread diameter outer 19.75mm
shank diameter: 18.90mm
thread pitch 0.97mm

Bolt length: 71.86mm
shank length: 4.75mm(very short length of shank!)
Total thread length including the 5mm shank: 53.94mm

head size is both 27mm or 1 1/16" (26.86mm measured)

The only size I'm totally unsure of is the thread pitch. I only have a pair of calipers to measure with, and hard to measure the thread accurately.
I measured 5 threads at 5.5mm to get an average.
For a more accurate thread pitch, if you have access to panhard rod bolts(or nuts) whilst the panhard bolts are maybe M16, the thread pitch is the same as the crank bolt.

Knowing LR as well as we all do, it's probably all imperial .. so convert my measured results to that system if need be.

I am currently finishing off rebuilding a motor and the bolt out of it was damaged and I put it somewhere safe - it's still somewhere safe - from me! I do know that it is 8.8 high tensile, so I will go shopping for one at a engineering place. Sure to be cheaper than the $35 dollar price tag on it.

Do you have the washer?
Hopefully you kept that piece in a less 'safe place'.

Without the washer, the bolt itself is useless.
If you've seen the bolt via online retail sources, you will note it's flanged, but the flange is not large enough to clamp the balancer.

Washer is about 2" and maybe 7-10mm thick. I don't have a spare to measure, I only remember that it's quite hefty.

Hi Arthur, I do have the washer (I just tossed it on the floor instead of putting it in a 'safe' place). I will measure it up and put the dimensions up here.

Washer outside diameter is 59.75 mm, inside diameter is 20.5 mm and thickness is 12.2 mm.

As luck would have it,the pulley on my my daily driver came lose yesterday and has chewed out the pulley and nose of the crankshaft, so I no longer have a spare motor! Not looking forward to changing motors over, but could be worse - at least I have a reconditioned motor ready to go in. Will likely be looking for a 300tdi crank (or bottom end) at some stage in the future.

When I did my first timing belt change .. I botched it quite serverely.
Short story: Woodruff key chewed out, crank coming loose .. the brainless driver not realising .. drove a good 1K or more with it, and it did feel a bit 'weird' .. so what does one brainless driver do .. go for a drive up to the Vic desert country(mallee) 12 hr drive there and back, a bit of fun in the dunes .. etc.
On the way home, noticed that it wasn't sitting at 2250 RPMs at 100k/h any more .. more like 2400 or so.
Couldn't figure out what/why .. so kept driving until the knocking(harmonic balancer!) was heard.

Crank was ever so slightly worn, but I thought looked ok, and my mechanic had a quick check too, he said will be OK.
Considering I'd done near on 90K klms since then and done my second belt .. I'd say we guessed right!

I didn't want to risk same thing again on my second belt service, so got everything(except harmonic balancer, and huge washer) new .. woodruff keys, and bolt too. I actually had it in mind to also get new timing cover bolts, but with a clean up they all looked really good anyhow. Zero wear(spanner/socket wear) on heads .. so I reckon a previous owner may have had them changed in the 330K klms before I bought it.

Hi Arthur, I have done 5 - 6 timing belt changes ok. The last time I put a new woodruff key in as I thought the old one was a little worn looking/ Torqued it up to specs and had applied loctite to the thread, so I don't know what went wrong. Have a new bolt coming (will measure the thread when it gets here) and got two new woodruff keys and will be applying thread sealer again (will check to see it's the right thread sealer).

I got the front of the motor stripped down today. Will take the radiator and intercooler out in the morning and drive it into the garage where I will remove the injector pump, exhaust and start to undo the engine mounts and bellhousing. Just hope for better luck this time. It's a shame as the motor had 338k on it and uses no oil. Will rebuild it eventually...
