Very difficult, not worth the effort.
Yes the beads hold the tyres on really well.
Hey folks,
Has anyone on here changed tyres using just a couple of tyre levers on the original Disco 1 alloys?
I was told by a guy at a tyre shop that the factory alloys have a deep/big bead area that makes them difficult to change by hand? Is this true?
I am thinking of buying a couple of tyre levers and having a shot - just wanted to know if it was too difficult to warrant?
Thanks!

Yikes!
Thanks guys.
I was planning on taking just a tyre (without wheel) on roof rack as second spare![]()
Does the bead flatten to almost nothing behind the valve like the D2 alloys? I've changed tyres on 16" D2 rims by hand using flat levers and rubber mallet where the biggest issue was breaking the bead, achieved using a bead breaker tool.

I've done it by driving over the edge of the tyre to break the bead. I now have a bead breaking tool - the type that anchors in the wheel centre and you screw down. Haven't tried, but I do have a spare alloy with a punctured tyre on it...

Haven't tried on an alloy rim but have done a few on steel rims.
I have a beadbreaker in the Defender and it occurred to me that the time to learn how to use it is not when you're stuck out bush.
Hard work but doable, you'd want to protect an alloy rim with something to stop the tyre levers causing damage.
There are a few threads on beadbreakers.

I won’t touch alloys for that reason
Drive a bit softer when the tyres are down and never had problems with steelies

Until a tyre guy told me - for years i always wondered why other guys were always worried about low pressures offroad.
I often dropped the disco down to 10psi on the sand and went everywhere like a tank on tracks whilst others were saying "Oh no, 10psi is for emergencies otherwise you will roll it off the bead".
Good 'ol Land Rover alloys! Just means i will have to carry the entire second spare wheel/tyre...
I was told about 18 years ago that the R&R Beadbreaker is about the only one that will break a bead on a LandRover rim.
Cheers
