    Clutch Slip?

    Hey folks,
    I have a 97 D1 300TDI.

Just recently whilst driving on the hwy if I change up a gear and give the engine some throttle I can get a little 250RPM spike in revs that does not match actual speed. The revs rev up and then quickly down to settle back in normal range. I am presuming this is clutch slip?

Is any clutch slip normal for a 300TDI? If I don't drive it like an idiot and just accelerate nice and slowly there is usually no clutch slip. I replaced the clutch about a year and a half ago, have done a lot of touring but no heavy towing etc. Unfortunately I seem to ride the clutch a bit to get the 300TDi to take off from stand still, hill starts etc. Even so, I expected the clutch to last more than a year and a half.

Interestingly I have always replaced Disco clutches with Valeo clutch kits. I was under the impression they were a good brand. However my clutch pedal has always felt 'softer'/easier to push down than other 300TDi discos. Perhaps I should put in a heavy duty clutch? Any brands that make a good HD clutch but don't cost a fortune?

    Thanks!!

I doubt any slip is normal… You can try in lower gears too, left foot on brake and then give it a little throttle to see if it will slip…

Any oil leak from the bellhousing? That might have contaminated the clutch? Also, is the clutch pedal coming up fast/immediately if you slip your foot off sideways (engine off)? Slow May indicate a blockage or faulty slave cylinder?

Clutch pedal comes up real fast - seems fine. About an inch of free movement on pedal before pressure too. I thought the pedal/master cylinder rod may have been out of adjustment - but that seems fine.
There is oil down near bellhousing. 2 engines later and despite religiously degreasing and pressure washing there has always been oil down there. I am hoping its not rear main. Always seems to ooze from 300TDi engines at rear of sump/t-seals. My engine does not use oil between changes etc.

How long should a clutch last on a Disco that gets used as a 4wd but not abused?

    One of my Brothers has a petrol,original clutch,done just under 400 000KM.

It has a towing trip coming up shortly,so i hope it is still going strong....

There should be no slip under any circumstances with this vehicle.

In my experience most clutch slipping is due to oil contamination of the clutch, which can have leaked from either the engine (usually rear seal) or the gearbox, rarely from hydraulic oil from the slave cylinder leaking.

The other cause will be worn driven plate. The life of a clutch plate is almost entirely dependent on the driver, and can vary from tens of thousands of kilometres to hundreds of thousands on exactly the same vehicle. The worst wear comes from drivers who use the clutch pedal as a footrest, but there can also be excess wear from excessive slipping when starting off and failure to match engine revs to the gear when changing gears (which also wears synchro).

Agree with everything above, shouldn't slip, could be a lubricant of some kind on the clutch.

Could be a collapsed/weak spring/springs in the pressure plate, assuming that was replaced when the clutch was done?

There is an aftermarket rear main seal for the 300tdi that is FAR superior to genuine, if you are interested I'll go find it for you.

    Cheers

I have always bought the 300tdi rear main that Turner Engineering sells.
Is that the one your talking about? If so, where else can it be bought from?

Yep, I use 3 piece clutch kits and get the flywheel resurfaced every time I do a clutch.
Bit disappointed it only lasted a year and a half or so.
