    300tdi - Auto - Towing

    Hi

This may well end as another manual vs auto slinging match, but thats not the intent.

When I go bush, I tow a camp trailer ( about 600kg) and the old 300tdi hasn't been great towing uphill.

I have found out since, that my injector pump timing was a bit out (slightly retarded) and i also had a broken valve spring. Both fixed now, ad I will be doing a test run with towing soon.

My question is, in regards to towing, what are peoples experience with a 300tdi manual vs auto?

I have found the auto is not sluggish once you get to about 1800rpm, and has heaps of grunt at 2500rmp (as expected).

I have had both a manual and Auto 300 tdi . I had no issues towing with either. The only change to my driving style was to knock it out of drive and lock it in 3rd when going up a hill towing. Remember its not a v8. When towing i maintain my happy speed and move over as soon as possible to let vehicles pass. If a trucks behind me i let them know i see them and tell them i will move over when safe to do so on the uhf. I have never had a problem with Heavy vehicles.

I used to tow a camper trailer withy TDI auto disco, ok on the flat but long hills were a killer, on the pentland hills on the western highway I would be lucky to hold 60kph. Current D3 TDV6 with same camper does 110 easily like the camper wasn't there, I doubt a manual would make any difference.

Thanks. I cam e to the same conclusion after some consideration.

Perhaps changing the ratio in the transfer case might be a better option for towing

I have a 300tdi manual...and I would think a change of engine would probably be the only thing that might help with towing capacity

Love the 300tdi, but I am not in a rush to tow much with it.
