Left over bolt after replacing head on 300TDI

    Hi all,

    I hope someone can help.

First time doing anything major on the Discovery 1 300 TDI and I seem to have a bolt left over which is doing my head in.

It takes a 17mm socket, seems to have a 12mm thread and has a thread length of around 15 mm. It also has a copper washer.

Would be grateful of any clues.

could be the coolant bolt from the top of the head.

It's not the sump plug is it?

Given it's got a copper washer on it I assume it's a drain plug.

Go over the old head, once you discount the head, manifold and thermostat housing bolts, there can't be many othe options.

The Disco motor has two sensors in the thermostat housing that the Defender doesn't have, could one of them been blanked off?

There is a coolant drain on the L/H side of the block, behind the the dip stick tube, but I’m sure it not that big.

Dave, where's the coolant bolt on the head?

Thanks for the reply. I've gone and had a look but am a little stumped. Is it under the rocker cover?

no, usually its fitted under the heater pipe about halfway down.

its not drilled in some aftermarket heads.

    Thanks Tony,

No clues on the old head I'm afraid and the thermostat bolts seem all accounted for.

The coolant bolt next to the dipstick is there too. See pic.

The sump holes seem all too big for this sized bolt.

    Cheers

There are two bolt holes on that end of the previous head if that is where you mean, but both are too small to accommodate this particular bolt.

Thank you for the suggestion though.

    Got him!

    You are a champion.

The replacement head was off a rebuild that had other issues and I've obviously missed that bolt when stripping it for the cleanup. I've taken it out and it is identical.

My alternative was going to be to fill it with coolant and oil and see what started spurting first, but wasn't overly happy at the thought of doing so.

    Big weight off my mind.

    Thanks!
