Thread: Engine plugs

Pretty sure they are holes for wading plugs which you may wish to fit when traversing creeks, rivers, or fords.

I thought the wading plugs were fitted somewhere near to hand in the timing cover and bellhousing.

You are correct! They are the holes for the wading plugs.

yeah, wading plugs as discussed in the oil leak thread.
Hopefully previous owners have left the bolts(plugs) in the glovebox. Short bolts, very wide flange head, about 10mm of thread.

If you have not got them they can be bought, for example: Land Rover Parts - PLUG - FLYWHEEL HSG+FRONT COVER - L/R 200+300 TDI (WADDING PLUG)

but as already said, normally you leave them unplugged and only have them fitted when driving through deep water(which nobody does).

...and at rego time you might use the plugs to hide oil leaks.

If you have leaks at the rear of the engine my experience has been the leaks are generally coming from the 'T' seals and not the crank rear main seal. Note if you are going to replace the rear main crank seal do not lubricate the new seal or crank shaft. These seals rely on friction heat to seal more tightly around the crank shaft.
