    Discovery 1 not firing.

    Evening all,

I have an issue with my 1991 Disco with the 3.5L V8i.

Last weekend as I was cruising along - car was running beautifully when all of a sudden it was as if someone had removed the key on me and the engine died. I coasted along to a stop and heard a loud pop (backfire?) after the engine had died.

Having pulled over I tried to get her started again. She turns over fine, but won’t fire at all.

All plugs are sparking (unsure of how strong) and appears to be getting fuel (unsure of pressure etc).

Any tips on where to start looking would be much appreciated guys.

    Thanks in advance!
    Josh

I recall this happened to me once in my '79.
It was dark and I was on a slight climb deep in the Big River area.
My initial thought was run out of fuel up the climb .. or something.
But it was too quick and sudden, just turned off.

Popped bonnet and first thing I noted was that one of the coil wires had popped off.
Can't remember now if it was the +ve or -ve, but didn't matter. one was off and obviously not spark.
    Back on, and going again.
Big fluke that it was the first thing I noticed, especially in the dark like that.

Never had an EFI Landrover V8(that lasted more than 2 hrs), but my rover V8 days were plentiful back in the day.
I remember that in part of the EFI system was a vacuum hose that, if it popped off, or split also caused a fail to proceed. Again, simple fix.

Point here is not to get fixated on a single aspect, but just to check the simple things like all electrical connections and stuff like that.
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

Thanks Arthur - appreciate the reply. I’ll pop the bonnet again today and recheck everything. I’ve had the split vacuum hose issue before causing the motor to die at low rpm!

Any other tips would be appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Josh

Updating this thread so that it may help others in the future..

Think the mystery is solved for now. She had visible spark, but not enough!

A new ignition coil and she’s back to life.

Will monitor closely but driving and starting great.

    Cheers,
    Josh
