New member seeking help with 3.9 Rover engine

    Hello
    I am a new member...
This may post may seem unusual but I am bordering on desperate...
I acquired a 1996 TVR Chimaera in April 2024 here in Melbourne. One of about 15 locally delivered.
They run from factory a Rover 3.9 litre engine from the D1.

My issue is it runs like a dog - cuts out at lights, runs very rich, hesitates/shunts at times and runs well at others.

It is impossible to find anyone who can help me get it sorted and I am not mechanically skilled to play myself. (I tried some LR shops and they were not interested in this vintage of engine).

I replaced the stepper motor which solved the idling issue.
I have RoverGauge which I cannot get to connect to the ECU...

I am in my 60s and retired and willing to travel to anyone who can sort the engine for me and very willing to learn.
    Happy to pay for help.

Any advice/tips greatly appreciated please? (I am in Surrey Hills Melbourne).
    Thanks
    Phil

I would start with the ignition amplifier, these are notorious for playing up especially when hot. It's common to swap in a Bosch unit that was also fitted in local cars like the magna and Holden's.
May it be worth getting something like an hei distributor from performance ignition which are in the nunawading area. Also a good set of ignition leads like magnacore.

The 3.9 in a Land Rover was fuel injected, is that the case in your application?
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Great advice. I recently put in a new Lucas ignition amplifier and new leads I sourced from John Craddock in the UK. I will reach out to perfomance ignition and see if they can check the ignition system is working correctly.

Thank you for all of your help

Fellow forum members, I just wanted to shout-out for all the help and suggestions getting my TVR Chimaera running properly. I took the car to Greg at AMV Land Rover in Heatherdale and he sorted it! It is now running like it never has in my 10 months of ownership. He found the induction leak, fixed the timing it was set at +24 degrees at idle, MAF was set incorrectly and was very rich and the tune resistor was malfunctioning. Lastly, the ignition leads on 2 & 4 were the wrong way around! They set the base idle again and the car is running like a steam train did 180k kms today and getting 9l/100. (It was 22l/100).
