    V8 Discovery into a 101fc

Hi all, my question today is what do I need to get a Discovery 1 to run in another car? Will it run with just the factory ecu? Ect as I am thinking of putting a discovery 1 v8 and auto into my 101fc. And am trying to figure out how to get it to run if I do so. I know I will need a ecu, and will the factory one do the job? Or will I need to do something to the ecu to get it running ? Photo is of my 101fc

A 3.9 with standard ECU will run OK in a 101. The later Thor 4.0/4.6 will require either an aftermarket ECU or modifying the standard ECU (Tornado Industries UK). Inlet will also require modification as it is a bit tight on the passenger side of the engine bay.

Not sure about the GEMS 4.0/4.6 - probably the same as the Thor.

But if the donor vehicle is a D1 then the 3.9 with standard ECU will work.

so long as you lift all the harness and the related components from the donor vehicle you can bolt almost any rover v8 into the hole vacated by any other rover v8 and have it work. IF you move the transmission with it its even easier on the wiring front.

Getting all the other bits and bobs like the traction control and BECM modules to stop throwing codes is a whole other story.

Given my choice An engine/box combo from a poverty pack 95 (before ABS and SRS was mandaotory) would be the pick of the bunch for the donor.

One thing to note - I had a V8 from a D1 in my 101 (I swapped the carbies across so no EFI). Regardless of that - while on an outback trip in QLD I hit a big pothole. The top of the front diff smashed the oil filter - total loss of engine oil.

Apparently on the 3.5V8 for 101's - the oil filter goes off on an angle (45 degree from memory).

But later V8's - the oil filter basically go straight down.. Hence at full articulation the top of my diff smashed into my oil filter...

    It only happened the once...

I eventually put an EFI 4.6 in mine and it transformed the 101... Yeah baby!

    Cheers,

Was that with a long oil filter like a Z9 or a short Z89?

Yes, it could be a problem on the RRC as well. The Land Rover ERR3340 is shorter than a Z9. The Z89 is also shorter than a Z9.
