We used to tow our van with the D1 (and my Volvo 740, and now with the D3). It's perfectly balanced. Fully loaded it's about 1600kg, and I can get the ball weight anywhere from "floating" to about 150kg depending on how I load it. With the Volvo it needed a bit more nose weight to keep it steady, with the D3 I just need enough on the nose to stop it "clunking".

I really miss the D1, but the wife hated driving it.

A 50mm ball is only rated for 3.5 tonne. It may not fail at the time of excess loading, but at a later time when in use. Should it fail and cause death or serious injury, forensic enquiries may be made to establish why and what caused the failure. Late to this thread, I seem to remember (without documentary evidence) early D1 required a reinforcing kit for the rear chassis to tow the maximum weight, this was overcome by fitting a Hayman-Reece type receiver hitch. Seems the gauge of the chassis metal was thinner than in the RRc, got worse in the early D2 when body mounts started cracking off the rails.

The 4000kg non-ABS and 3500kg ABS models is common between RRc and Disco 1 and 2

Towing works on the lowest rated part though (including the trailer and its components), and a standard 50mm ball is rated to tow 3500kg max

Just a correction, my Disco1 actually has a max ball weight of 120kg, not 150kg.

Out of interested, does anybody know the max ball weight of an Isuzu County 120 Ute?

Early update d1 had an issue of the body mount at the rear of the engine bay use to crack the body mount

Even so there were problems with the D2. The former chaplain of the Sydney Club owned a TD5 D2 which had the chassis replaced under warranty because of body mount cracking

The D2a's had much heavier body mounts on the chassis than the early versions, it was one of the "700" odd changes.

In my experience it was just the one behind the PS front wheel. It didn't make any difference. I had it plated and it never cracked again. The other place they cracked is in the steering box / panhard area. The factory produced a gusset plate, and similarly it never recracked. That one was more critical.
