factory tow limits were something like, pre ABS optional/mandatory (about 1995 from memory) you could tow 4000kg, post abs optional/mandatory its 3500.

the UHB is available online if you know where to look and the details are in the RAVES which you can purchase from the forum.

In the old Range Rover Classic manual it says in an emergency you are allowed to tow 6 tons, but not to exceed 40 km/h whilst in low range. The D1 is basically similar, so there must be quite a bit of fudge factor built into the tow limits. Several members on here have moved some 'heavier than normal' loads with their D1's, but you would want to be damned careful where and how you did that!

Emergency tow weights of six tonne, in fact any loading over 3500 kg, if using a 50mm ball will render the ball unserviceable.
A 50mm ball is only rated for 3.5 tonne. It may not fail at the time of excess loading, but at a later time when in use. Should it fail and cause death or serious injury, forensic enquiries may be made to establish why and what caused the failure. There could be some awkward questions asked and some time spent at His Majesty's pleasure.

Thanks that explains it, I always thought the older Land Rovers could tow 4 tons.

But remember, irrespective of the gross tow weight 3500kg or 400oKg (my two D1s were both 3500kg no ABS) - the tow ball weight is only 150KG max.

If I recall you're on the right path if your D1's were in the era when ABS was available as an option but not fitted then you had the 3500kg tow limit. As I recall the Deefers got the same derating at the same time even though ABS wasnt even an option for them

So to drag around anything heavy one would need a dog trailer to keep the weight off the ball.....

Our camper has just over 150Kg on the ball,it weighs 1600Kg loaded.
