Question Reuse head gasket that's barely run.

Hi I know this is a pretty stupid question but I would love your opinions.

I have just rebuilt my engine (300tdi) in the backyard and whilst rushing one late night in the dark I accidentally installed my head gasket upside down/ back to front. Went I started it yesterday it spewed oil everywhere from the front oil passage because the seal at that point is not symmetrical. The gasket I had is a three hole multi layer gasket which I know cannot be reused after a heat cycle. However I am wondering if anyone has ever tried reusing one that has only ever been clamped down. It only ran for about ten seconds so not much heat would have been made.

A new metal gasket is about 100 dollars delivered and would take a week to arrive.

Again I know this is a silly idea but is it worth a try?

This $200 discovery is turning into a $3,000 discovery.

Paint the gasket with silverfrost paint and try reusing it, what have you got to lose, apart from a bit of labour?
I have done and gotten away with the silver paint trick, but it was on an early Corolla with far less compression.

nope, and if your head bolts were reused before you torqued the head down you'll probably want to replace them too.

I’ve done it with copper coat, but never on a diesel.

Feel free to ignore this, but :

I'm 51, not a professional mechanics arsehole, and have been doing this for a few decades now on lawnmowers, outboards, cars and real boats. I've done what you've done (although not with a head gasket) a few times. These days I ask myself "Do I want to do this again, and if so how long will it take and how much will it cost?".

Based on the stuff in this thread I'd buy a new gasket and new bolts, then do it once more. Otherwise you might be in for at least one more go-around.

    Unhappy

Alright, I suppose I don't need it running urgently and Its best off not to take the risk. I'm hoping to subsidies all I spend on this Landrover by running it on nearly free fuel made from motor oil, so I can tell myself this is an investment. I'm way over budget but I need a car that's reliable (I still cant believe I'm saying that about a land rover) because all I have are ****-boxes that keep blowing up. With how much the budget has grown I could have fixed my GQ but oh well that's hindsight.

Good call on the gasket. Motor oil as fuel, not so much.

You'd be better off making biodiesel properly. I don't know much about motor oil fuel but the science of biodiesel is well proven with tests like titration and volume calculations to prove that you are getting it right.
