    200tdi head off

    Hi all,
While waiting for hopefully good news from the machine shop on the head on my 200tdi after it cooked itself on the weekend, what else should I do while in pieces. I will be replacing the viscous fan hub because I am pretty sure that was the cause of the overheating as it does not lock up. But should I also do the timing belt and gaskets as well? Should I pull radiator and get it checked or just replace with an alloy 3 row? Only having just bought it for $3500 as going vehicle and this happening plus the fact that it has 400k on the clock and it being a 200 where would guys call it a lost cause. It's a clean vehicle with plenty of receipts and well documented service history, but has some rust starting in the bottom of the doors.

All of the above. Look at it as an opportunity for a major service. Don't listen to the nay sayers. The only issues with 200Tdis is getting bits. 300s are easier. But they are generally reliable, and D1s don't need nanocoms etc, just basic knowledge and tools.

I won't comment on the rad, as it will depend so much on the condition of yours, and the quality of the replacement you get.

Good luck with the head. Enjoy the car.

So the machine shop came back with pressure tested ok but failed hardness and there is some minor cracks between the glow plug holes and valves. Some googling says that this is a 200 tdi fault. Machine shop says it’s not worth using. But considering that 200 tdi heads are rarer than rocking horse poop what do you guys think? Safe to use or just scrap the complete car?

I rebuilt my Disco 1 V8 about 4 years ago, went with UK based parts suppliers, cheaper than any place here. RPI engineering is no more, very sad, but they only did V8 engines.
I also got top hat liners from Turner engineering, they sell all engines and parts for all landrovers including diesels.
I remember them selling brand new 200tdi heads as well as recond ones.
Expensive? yes, about 1,200 British pounds. back then. depends on what your prepared to spend. at least 2,000 dollars with postage I would think.

    worth a look,
