    Failure to start

    Landrover Tdi 300 1998
Anyone have any suggestions, drove about 500klms, pretty hot day 37deg stopped car and it wouldn't restart. Tried changing through shifter (auto) ignition lights looked ok, but car wouldn't start. Waited 5 minutes and car started no problems, continued on 1/2 hour or so turned it off and car did exactly the same thing. Again car started after some time, any ideas?

Hi Martyn, the engine was completely dead, ignition lights on, like trying to start in gear rather than 'P' or 'N'.

Volt drop through a faulty alarm spider , or a worn out starter/ solenoid.
Next time it does this on a hot day, just pour some H20 on it to cool it and try again. Or just replace the starter before that happens.
Seriously, the alarm spider on the later Tdi's is a right pain, it can give these symptoms as the voltage can drop so low at the relay/solenoid that it won't kick in at all. Try to start it with a bypass wire next time. If it goes straight away then the wiring between the starter switch and the starter solenoid is suspect, IE the alarm spider.

    Disco 93 V8/GAS Won't start:(

    Hey Guys

I am currently in the bottom dip of the roller coaster ride of owning a Discovery

I have a Disco 93 V8i/GAS that won't start too - I think it's the damn immobilser that has kicked in and won't disconnect

    A bit of history:

I took it too the LPG guys who tuned it and tweeked it for me, it ran well on the gas but unforetunately like a dog on fuel, then I took it to Land Rover (last week) who cleaned the injectors and tuned it for both fuel and gas and it ran well, not great but a lot better than it had ever done in the past - then over the weekend I cleaned out the potentiometer and the throttle position sensor with a bit of lube/cleaner spray - Wow! what a difference, the response was rapid and the auto dropped into a lower gear in a flash (I was on the top of the roller coaster ride at this point)

Then for no damn reason what so ever, it just battle to fire, the starter turned and had an occational burp as it intended to fire - but nothing.

I put the battery on charge overnight and the next day - but still nothing - nada

I am getting fuel through - to the point of it smelling out the place - (possible flooding maybe?)

Q - how does one bypass the immobaliser? - (now that sounds suspect I know) - but I still think the spark is supressed due to the immobaliser?

Come on you guru's - this should be an easy one

There is a post somewhee showing a pic of a modified spider, a couple of wires were bridged and it fixed the problem.
I think there was also a LR mod that was a 'plug in' that bypassed or joined a couple of wires on the circuit board..

ok found the post... it has pics in the tutorial.

    Thanks Rovernaut...

Seems like a hell of a job... but I'll try anything at this stage,

I checked out the previous entry on the 'spider' fix you linked me to and the pics to go with it,

my 93 Disco has the radio in the centre 'gear shift' console and the vent/fan controls where your radio is -

My fuel & starter relays (two steel cased relays) are below the stearing column with a black box with a wire dangling out of it (I presume this to be the aerial for the remote) - I will check the guts of it and see if it is the 'spider' you talk of..

I'll be back tommorow and give some feedback
