The 'clock spring' should be the rotary coupler, that is behind the steering wheel, and provides connection to the steering wheel airbag, horn and cruise control if you have that. It is a cassette that has what looks like HDD connector cable, and it is wound like a clock spring so it can provide continous connection lock-to-lock. If your steering wheel was turned whilst the steering box was out, then you may have ripped some of the wires out later. At the very least take the steering wheel off and check the cassette out with a multimeter. There is also a 5w fuse hiding near there under the steering cowl, it may have dislodged. If the wires were ripped out you should be able to find a rotary coupler 2nd hand - just remember that it should have all it's locating lugs and you can re-centralise the cassette if it wasn't sticky taped at center position by gently turning anticlockwise to it's limit (using your fingers -gently!) and then back 2.5 turns ( ie the coupler will do 5 turns lock-to-lock). Even if you get another cassette, the SRS will ( ?) need another clearing of the fault codes before the light goes out again.

Thanks for you help, I at least have some understanding of how it all works now. Tell me, how do you get the steering wheel off without disturbing the airbag? Is this something I should attempt?

Invest in a RAVE disk ( Markets section - Workshop manual on CD) - the short answer is undo the screws on the reverse of the steering wheel and the airbag lifts out.
