    The new RRC replacement

Bought this D1 about 6 weeks ago to replace my 1986 RRC which rolled near Mt MeHarry W.A. The D1 was a bit rough. Rust in the roof (windows) and faded paint on the roof and bonnet, clapped out 3.9 with a leaky lpg mixer, saggy springs, bold tyres, leaking power steering and on went the list.
    Perfect.......

So I bought the written off RRC back from the insurance company and removed all the goodies (all under 4 months old) Including the brand spanking 4.6 (4,000 ks on it) 2" suspension, Cooper 265 stt's, pacemaker extractors with a 2.5" system and fitted it all on the D1, cut the rust out and had it re sprayed.

Now I'm fitting all the goodies - UHF, twin batteries, Sat phone, rear drawers and a roll cage

Took her for her first spin on the weekend to Mandurah and all went well.

Very nice! I pretty much did the same thing from my older d1 to my newer d1(s2) ...its nice how everything is compatible.
dont forget to trash that old rotoflex coupling. the tailshaft and pinion off your old rangie should fit with a spacer . pretty easy jobe once you have removed the rotoflex pinion.

Cheers, it's great as so far the build hasn't cost me anything, i'm still under budget from the insurance $$. The only thing I changed was the round cross member to the square RR one which kept the exhaust nicely tucked up. I threw a new rotoflex coupling in for now, are they known to fail?

yeah, on a stock vehicle they are fine (around town etc) but as soon as you start lifting and going for offroad runs they fail very quickly. BMW introduced them to the discos when they bought them out in '94.
I have done a few rotoflex -> uni conversions, unfortunately I have never had the luxury of a proper pulley so I usually end up trigger happy with the grinder and cutting disc(being careful not to cut too far into the flange so as to reach the pinion nut and thread) lots of wd and a good wedge and block hammer.
Deffinitley worth considering the conversion if you already have the bits off the old rrc. Its probably worth replacing the pinion seal while you are at it. a couple of extra moments might save you repeating the task further down the track.
ps. is the damamged rrc a soft dash? if so I will buy the interior off you (?)

Okay, thanks for the info. Havn't had any experience with them so that will be added to the list of to do's. I kept all the running gear etc and have the luxury of having a local landrover garage allowing me free reign in thier workshop, helps heaps as I did most of the work there.

Unfortunatly dash was ruined in the crash (tree stump through the window) and the recovery process didnt help. Ive gotten rid of the shell now but might know of another classic getting wrecked though, let you know.

    Cheers
