i just find it a real pain sliding strap into reciever.
not really keen on the recovery devices that slide in either as they destroy departure angle

There have been a number of custom rear bars made - if you do a search on rear bar they should come up. Me, I put a Rangie ARB bar on the back of my disco - but I wanted somewhere to sit. The ARB bar, like the bullbar, has half decent recovery points on it, and as it is a combined towbar, it's pretty tough.

Putting a RR Classic rear bar on a Disco 1

However, I did do a bit of investigation into what else would fit before I found the ARB bar. This pic

shows what the end of the chassis is like in cross section. Ignore the bit of steel sitting there - it didn't work out. I found that you could drop the towbar a bit and slip in a slightly adjusted (ie bent to match the chassis) piece of RSJ over the crossbar so it gives you something to weld a recovery point to. You'd have to make a hole in your bumper bar, and maybe use longer towbar bolts, but it would be a decent rear point. If you wanted more departure angle, you could remove the towbar altogether, leaving the recovery point.
