93 Disco series 1 ignition switch/ barrel fault

    Hi All,

need some help working this out....

when I turn the ignition key, no spark under the bonnet, no clicks at starter motor etc, however, all the lights on the dashboard light up. Also, key operates freely in the barrel, not sticky at all.

So, this is an electrical problem at the ignition switch/ barrel from what I can tell.

Now, Do I repace the whole barrel and go through the hassle and expense of rekeying, or can I just replace the electrical unit at the back of the ignition barrel.

I have been given two opinions, both different...any other advise out there?

    Cheers all

Before you spend money, are you able to isolate the electrical contacts. Most folk try to put a light oil based spray in the attempt to clean contacts which is a tad hit and miss and even more fouling. Sorry I can't help with disassembly experience but this is the first port as the final pin most likely has soot (assuming the rest of the line is checked first with ohm meter)

Classic question I would ask, are you slightly slow in switching from ign to start. I constantly ask this or observe and those little gentle lady's dont realise copper switches contacts foul up with that slower arc. Of course gentle but decisive. Almost sounds like bull to state but when I pull many switch gear apart and repair for nothing, this can be the cause.

Thanks mousie, reading between the lines here, are you asking me if I am slightly slow and do I drive the car like an old lady?

nope, I reckon I am pretty quick and drive like the stig. But thanks for asking.

Seriously though, driving a diesel, so I just click it over when the coil light goes out, I look at that contact issue tomorrow.

    Cheers,

If it does turn out to be the ign switch, then it is available separately from the lock assy.

The end of the barrel where the electrical plug goes on can loosen

might not even be the ignition switch...

is there 12v at the starter when you try cranking?

Do the Glow plugs fire up when you turn the ignition on??
