    Automatic Trans noise

    Hiya everyone,

Well, it was saturday, decided to try out my 4x4 out in Lancelin's popular sand dunes....

Long story short, the stock 1993 disco was airborne.

after driving home and starting it this morning, there is a definate transmission "rattle".

It doesnt do it while in park or neutral, but while in either 1 2 3 D or R you can hear it. It is almost like the sound of a bolt rattling around in a glass container. It is definetely coming from somewhere in the trans housing.

    Any ideas?

Check the exhaust brackets // Also the center muffler may have lost it's "guts"
It won't be the first time the "Rattle in a can" sound comes from this area (exactly as you described it)

Either that or it's ditto on blknight's quote

Just take a rubber mallet, go underneath the vehicle and thump the exhaust system gently to see if the rattle noise can be reproduced.

Found the problem after having a womans look at the problem... A few days later my right hand side flange gasket went.. Had a closure inspection of the motor and gearbox from underneath, all 4 mounts had gone to pot, motor sitting about 1.5 inches lower than it shouldve been. The exhaust was rubbing on parts of the chassis

All hail, new exhaust, new mounts, and now the requirement of rebuilding the transfer case.

no damnit, its not allowed to be that simple...

these stories are suppoest to end in horror stories about how much rebuilding the auto cost..... when they dont I dont get any more ammo to throw at the why manuals are better than auto battles...

seriously, glad to hear it wasnt anything super expensive or catastophic.

Ahahaha, if I had the overhaul the Transmission, id be buying a kit and doing it myself.

Wouldnt midn finding somone in perth that is looking for a bit of paid work to give me a hand on some of it though.

Still trying to decide if i recon the transfer case and put some air lockers in! Im getting frustrated going up a dune, getting halfway up and not being able to roll backwards!!!

Whos silly idea was it to make a $43990 4wd and not put LSD in the boot?!

After having an auto 4x4, i dont think ill go back to manual any time soon. Cant see the point.. its going to chew the fuel regardless, and i would have to replace clutches all the time.. the things that go wrong when you use a car for what its for...
