been looking at them heaps and a defender seems like it would have a lot more room, am i wrong in saying the suspension is exactly the same, are the comfort levels the same other than the fact that a defender dont have no pretty dash but a good seat if comfort in my eyes, i want a diesil but defenders are a lot dearer, why is this, would it be cheaper to get a county and do dieseilconversion or stick with disco you people have experiance and know more about rovers tham me so give me your thoughts

Now comfort and defender shouldnt be used in the same sentance, yes they do have very similar suspention just different spring rates and minor differences, vertually no creature comforts other than a radio and windscreen wipers which you dont want to use due to it will let more rain in than your wrongler.
The Handbrake lever is in the most uncomfortable place and you get a dint in your left calf muscle or you end up driving with your left leg behind your right leaving you with an aching back.
Heating and airconditioning is more a wish than a reality and unless you buy an extreme TD5 you wont get power windows.
Great off road, near indestructable Sailbury rear diff which is the main difference in drivline.
In saying all that, they are a great truck that if you can see past it's short comings (you have owned a jeep so it wont be hard) then you will quickly become a fanatic.
The D1 is a great unit but if you want space forget about it, it is it's biggest downfall.
Dont bother with a D2 unless you have the budget to back it up, it may not break but when it does you will know about it.....or your pocket will.

welll where will I start......................I own a 97 300Tdi disco with 310,000klms on the clock has done heaps of touring very comphy........no back seats has a full draw system & cargo barrier etc etc.............................He owns a 130 Defender 27,000klms on the clock bought to retire the disco as she is getting old.....just got back from 12,600klms touring NT & WA in the fender just as comphy as the disco.........so your choice couyld get harder now

I have an 02 and 95 - both V8s both run LPG and petrol. The 95 is auto the 02 is 5 speed manual. I love them both equally.
The 95, true it is, has a small boot length ways, but it is far higher than any other 4x4 I can think of. So if you are prepared to stack and you have a cage your in for a good load of gear. The series II though is much better storage wise because it is just as high but is about a foot longer - you really can stick a heap of stuff in it.
The series II had a lot more electrickery. I had a flashing green Hill Descent Control light on this AM when I engaged low range for a spin off road - couldnt get it to come on no matter how hard I engaged low range. Took it home and jumped underneath and pulled the connectors apart around the transfer case and sprayed with contact cleaner - back together and all back to normal. I did the same thing once with the underseat plug for the seat belt pirotechnics - contact cleaner is the best friend of a modern vehicle with less than 1 volt electronic circuits...and whilst the gold connectors look clean because the voltage is so low the smallest amount of surface oxidisation can cause problems.
But the 02 is ahead in terms of rigidity and build. It also has a fair bit more room in the wheel arches to fit bigger tyres. For example I have 265/70/16 ATs in the 02 with no scuffing (TJM front bar) and 245/70/16 ATs on the 95 and cant go bigger for scuffing...both standard suspension.

been thinking bout it and i want a cost friendly rig would i financially be better off with a deisel disco or fender or an old county on gas, did the county come out in desiel what are they worth to buy if they did i still like the disco but fenders seem practical
Really depends on your budget, a tdi with low/average k's in good nic will set you back anywhere from 6-12k depending on year and mileage, fender has more room for touring but lacks comfort if thats your thing. An isuzu county is probably the pick of the bunch but are getting on and will set you back about the same as a mid 90's disco. The D1 is a pretty good alround vehicle, comfy and not too big or small only way you could make it better is to fit the tdi and auto to a fender or build a 110" D1 :D.
Check with others here but I believe that the Defenders don't ahve the ability to fit baby capsules etc. due to a lack of child restraint anchor points.
There is also an old saying along the lines of you will use what you've got, ie. If you have a lot of space, you'll still fill it. The wife & I have gone out in the Disco (94) with a 40L fridge tent, sleeping bags etc. and haven't had a problem. I also have the reduced cargo area due to a LPG setup with the gas tanks in the cargo area.
in regards to lpg is the boot the only place for a tank what sort of mileage do you get on gas what sort of cost is it
