Welcome to AULRO (and the dark side some will say)

The Series 1 disco is a corker. I'm hoping to get one myself before too long.

the early ones had smaller headlights and a 200tdi engine. About 95 there was an upgrade to better headlights and a 300tdi engine. this model ran untill 1998 and is the pick over the 200tdi. Better headlights, dashboard, and parts for the 200tdi are getting harder to get.

Welcome along mate. As mentioned the series 1 update models are good vehicles. With the smaller capacity diesel the auto box is a good option to keep it in the torque.

The first of the updates appeared in '94 but there were a few minor changes up until the last ones in '98. Nothing exceptionally major except I believe the later ones all had ABS and airbags. There have been a few threads about people making up drawers and a quick search should have plenty of pics for you.

Areas to have a look at include the alpine windows for signs of rust (some seals didn't and lead to rust) and a quick look around the footwell as some heaters have been know to leak & cause issues there.

If you're touring with it a cargo barrier will be high on the list of to-dos. Without one you really can't take advantage of the height available in the back. Tdi 300s need to have particular care taken with the timing belts. They do wear and as you'd imagine get nasty if they break. I do believe there are conversion kits around to convert them to chains/gears.

As with any vehicle, a good service history and record is better than a lower km unit with no history. Good luck!

Mate, you will hate a Disco after a wrongler....

    Discos dont leak,
Disco Tdis dont use copius amounts of fuel
Disco Tdis dont break just because you havnt spent a fortune on it for a week or 2
    Discos are comfortable
Discos are easy to get parts for and parts are cheap

So you really wont know yourself

'96 to '98 300 Tdi auto or R380 5 speed is a good touring set up.

Mine is a 97 S with 35mm Ridepro lift and big bore shocks (a little stiff but great handling) on 235 85 16 BFG allterrains.

Hannible Rooftop tent on a Tradesman rack (modified)

I dont have rear drawers as they are damn heavy normally but a couple of people have made them that are on here so the search button would be your best freind.

Fit a good dual batt set up (tray is already there unlike the Jeep and you can fit a damn huge battery), decent bull bar, towbar and cargo barrier and other than the normal stuff recovery coms etc your set.

Tdi has plenty of scope for tweaks with the pump but best not to go too far without a EGT guage and there are a couple of diff ratio options and lockers are not a problem.

Heres some pics of mine set up, good luck with it

Ive never heard of that but the timing belt should be changed at 80000km intervals in normal operation and 60000km if heavy 4wd use.

There was a timing cover upgrade but it should have been done by now.

The trick with the timing belt is not too tight, 20Nm which is just taking the slack out really and they last fine.

Depending on the sort of touring (length of time) I built a unit to sit in the rear cargo area. It was cheap as BUT... has its drawbacks, such as I now can't fit my 50 litre fridge in. For the cost it is very effective but not so good as the $$$ ones.

I haven't got any pics so will deal with that at sun-up.

    Xav

Disco Tdis dont use copius amounts of fuel, mmm ok got me, im running 35's regeared to suit and out of 60 litres i get 300-350ks 300Tdi manual with 4.11s on 35" simexs that my mate owns got an easy 10/100kms on one trip we did, before he went to 4.11's it was pushing 15s
Disco Tdis dont break just because you havnt spent a fortune on it for a week or 2, jeeps arent that bad but natuarlly you will break things running 35'sIve owned 2 Jeeps, it was like they loved being touched with spanners......man that sounds wrong
Discos are comfortable, so is my jeep You must be short and skinny with a spine made from titainium, the last Wrongler I road in was a stocker and it was a horrid ride but reasonable off road.....when it actually was together for long enough to go 4wding
Discos are easy to get parts for and parts are cheap, so are jeeps What you think is cheap for for a jeep part you could buy the Disco for

Never ever buy a tdi that has had a zues timing gear conversion, they give nothing but trouble- the belt if changed regularly (by the book) are more reliable.

interesting ill remember that one, my other thoughtshave been a defender as it would b a better size for touring but thy seem to be a lot more expensiv than the disco
