On a D1, if I remove the passenger airbag in order to put in the grab handle - is there a hole left in the dash?
Do I need to fit a whole non-airbag dash?

I don't know for sure...but I don't think it states anywhere on the registration papers or on any other document whether the car has airbags or not?
I have a 96 D1. MUCH better dashes? What do you mean?
But if I did remove it, what would be under it? a gaping hole?
If you removed the passenger side airbag, would anyone notice?
Do you want some pix of my non-airbag D1 dash?

Yes, there is a hole left behind- with the grab handle installed and the rubber mat, it does not bother me - you can always put the airbag back in if you don't like the look
In Qld it wasn't illegal when I asked Qld Transport 2 years ago. Reason being that the vehicle passed ADRs or whatever in the base model without SRS airbags. Same goes for ABS.
If it does leave a hole, which I imagine it would, you could just get a non airbag dash top.
As Utemad said the airbags etc are non-standard options - so I believe removing one and or both would not be illegal.
RonMcGr: why? cause the missus has nothing to hold on to! (No jokes!)
p38arover: thanks, I have seen non-airbag models.
I just wanted to know from someone who had removed one for dismantling or any another reason, if there was a hole left or was the dash complete like a non-airbag model and I could just add the grab rail.
langy: thankyou very much, that was the answer I was looking for.
Hmmm... be very very carefull playing around with that stuff. There is usually a master power connector that you have to disconnect. I personally know of people who have been injured working around those things, and I am aware of at least one fatality of a radio fitter.
Why not leave it in there and mount the jesus bar from the roof?
Despite what people say airbags are your best hope of avoiding serious brain injury in a crash. If your mate/partner was in there and you had a prang and they ended up a vegetable how would you live with yourself?
