Another Tyre thread

Hi guys went into my local tyre joint again today to finally part with my hard earned cash and splurge on new shoes on the mighty beast, wanting to get a little more out of it off road i asked what is the biggest tyre they could fit? A: what size do you have now R:225/75/16 on standard D1 7j x 16 alloys.
A: thats as big as you can go! HMMMM R: thats funny i said cos the placard says 235/70/16. A: oh well thats as big as you can go its the law!!!! agreeing with a disappointed look on my face i said get em in we will fit em then. (not fitted yet) I've been looking all over the net and all the info i can find is "no more than 15mm greater than the maximum tyre rated by the manufacture. so what is my question is what is the maximum tyre that LR say can be fitted to a D1?

PS the aust standard published said that a 7" rim can have 215 up to 275 for series 70/75 tyre.

I thought the 15mm was a Queensland thing and the rest of Oz were allowed 50mm over size.

15mm over will allow you a 245/70/16 or 225/75/16 as the largest diameter.

245/75/16 seems to be the size for a D1 and 265/75/16 for the D2

I run two sets to get around this but when I update I won't as it is a hassle to change tyres all the time, I may even tone the tyres down as well......not

Within 15mm I think it is 245/70-16... not 245/75-16.

Where does the Aus standard say 215 - 275? I think that you may find that to be incorrect, and the guidance is that the rim width needs to be specificed by the tyre manufacturer. Most will run up to 265 on a 16", but some like Mickey Thompson will permit up to 285.

Interestingly, Ive also never been questioned about the tyre size I have had selected and fitted before, and I've never bought a set of standard sized tyres before.

245/70 will be fine. May pay to go to another tyre place that has a clue.

I to would go to another shop.Sounds like these guys dont give a S**t what you want just want to sell you what they want. You run into a lot of oposition wnen you go to put someting other than the recomended on your LR but just look at what you need and talk to people like Slunnie and youll find out what is best. Wider may not be better but brand is a big issue and I love the Micky thompons 265/70-16 but each to their owns and mine are hardly worn in. Time will tell as I loved the Toyo Open Country AT for the money as well just wanted a more agressive tyre for off road use.

If you are confused about tyre sizes and markings as well as rim compatibility and profiles etc have a look at http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html
It should help you make a decision or at least be able to detect the BS next time you are spun a line by a tyre salesman.

If you combine the technical information on that site with the experiences on specific vehicle models by AULRO members you should be able make a good decision.

My D1 had original 235's & I upgraded to 245's BFG All Terrains. Anything larger I was told I may have to cut or bend the bottom part of the rear guard. No mention of legalities. Go to another tyre place.

You are talking uncertified? Talk to an engineer 1st. In Vic I believe its possible to certify 33" If less will be easy May cost $400 ish for blue slip. Tony

thanks guys for all the info, sadly i'm moving house this weekend and need a new set for the move (trailer)(tryin to kill two birds with one stone) and i had a little to much fun off road a week ago and put a bubble in the tyre wall so time is an issue i might have to wait till next time or a second set of rims for the eng cert and go 33's got a lift already and the dints take care of the cuts required to the rear guard. was hoping to get 31-32' i will take all this info with me today and get what i want!!!!

PS, going cooper a/t from goodyear a/t i know theres not to many cooper fans out there

Great site, very informative.

But now I'm asking why my D3 has 255/60R16 112V Wranglers on it. The load and speed ratings seem excessive for the D3.
