Another Tyre thread

The standard original tyres sizes for a Series 1 discovery are:
205/80R16 = 734.4mm diameter or
235/70R16 = 735.4mm diameter.

The load index also needs to be at least 101 so each tyre can handle 825kg minimum. The speed rating should be "S" minimum so it can take up to 180km/h.

Other tyres sizes:
245/70R16 = 749.4mm diameter
245/75R16 = 773.9mm diameter

245/70R16 fit straight on and depending on the type of tread shouldn't rub on the guards.

245/75R16 also fit straight on, but I'm told you will probably have to trim the rear guard at the bottom slightly.

There is no doubt the tyre dealer you initial saw was a fool! I currently run 235/70R16 on alloys - absolutley 100% legal and no problems at all!

I'm stepping up to 245/75R16's so will see how that goes.

Okay, someone with different smarts to me , please explain this to me:

must not be more than 1.5 times the vehicle
manufacturer’s widest optional tyre.

This is from QLD transport. Now for the D2, the placard states the following sizes:

215/75/16
235/70/16
255/65/16
255/55/18

So I have read about the 15mm rule.....what about the 1.5 times?? If someone can explain/ work it out for me, would be greatly appreciated,

Howdy Stevo , First off divide the tyre size by the amount of sockets in a sidchrome tool kit then times it by the amount of lugs on each tyre ...... sorry mate .

So under the 15mm rule you can go a little larger than the largest standard tyre.

Me neither.....they have on the PDF form for QLD Transport, relating to the 15mm rule in general....ie not specific to 4WD's per se....then they have the comments re: 1.5 times???? I cannot work it out,

Great site, very informative.

But now I'm asking why my D3 has 255/60R16 112V Wranglers on it. The load and speed ratings seem excessive for the D3.

The D1 is only around 2000kg, your D3 is about 2700kg. So the D3 needs a damn strong tyre. The D3 also goes like hell so need a higher speed rating.

Generally as a tyre gets bigger the load index goes up, so your 255's will have a higher load index than most 235's. The 255's also have a relatively lower profile so again generally the speed index will go up.

Q: Shouldn't the D3 have 17 or 18inch wheels anyway?

Typo.....minimum size is 17's for a D3 and only for V6 and TDV6...miminim on the V8 is 18's,

I knew as soon as I hit send , I should have clarified....Marks...ie WhiteD3 was a typo as a D3 doesnt come with 16's,
