u need to come see the tyre places over this side of town,i have fitted 235/85/16 and 33 simex and 265/75/16 over the year and 3 places i went to didnt say a thing about them being over size,
Ok well here is the rest of the story, i have rang every wheeler and dealer in the Werribee/Hoppers crossing district and with out mentioning the law said " i have a D1 and want to fit 245/75/16's reply from them all "NUP" too big 15mm max is the biggest you can go!!! i said "i know that applies to cars but what about 4wd" "nup they are the same under the vicroads rule" then they went on about some new national guide lines BLAH BLAH BLAH. so the absolute biggest i could get fitted was 245/70/16 so bugger all difference and when i say i rang everybody I'm talking 20 OD places (the boss will be p!$$&d if he found out i spent and hour on the phone) so at least in my little part of VIC you cant do it, and I'm not driving to SA to get tyres you can do just about anything over there
.
PS, i did ask the question how do all those other guys get there monster tyres then???
Reply: Don't know but if the boys in blue pull em up they will get a canary.
PPS, went with Brigdestone lt694 (dueler A/T)- 245/70/16

Who told you that?
They're talking out their behind
We have the 15mm law too, (this is without engineering).... Engineered, the sky is the limit - IF, you can past a 110km/h lane change test...
They dont foul the body at ANY position etc...
But it costs!!!
Victoria the same, you just need engineers cert...
Ive been intrigued with the this thread and others, as I too have just forked out the dollars for new tyres.
I have a set of steel rims with std 235/70r16 federals on the D2 to carrry me through till the money comes, while the alloys are off with the worn Bstone Duelers 245/7016.
I finnished the D2s service and gave it a wash and POLISH, then even gave it a WAX. I then set off with MasterCard to the Tyre dealers with anticipation.
"LT construction All Terrains please, What do you have?"
First guy just looked at shiny car and told me I do not need offroad rubber and gave me an one option only. Road pattern passenger construction Savero.
2nd GUY (Bridgestone / Cooper dealer) "No such size as 245/7016 try these Coopers 245/75/16" I responded that I have 245/70/16 in the Bridgstone. Without even looking he said no mate your wrong. No such tyre.
3rd guy "Goodyears are the best tyres that will suit your car, you wont need offroad rubber."
4th guy Tyre power "What are you likely to be doing? How often? How much gear do you carry? are you towing a lot?
For your 7 "rims max is a 265/75/16 min is a 235/70/16. Do you have a brand in mind? this what Ive got in stock. Ill get it in if I dont have the size you want
Most places just want to sell what ever is gathering dust to keep stock moving and make a quick dollar. Only 2 mentioned legalities of fitment. and only one of those wasnt trying to push their own agenda for a sale because of legalities.
It should not be this hard
Yep, going through similar dramas myself: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/soapbox/61...-shopping.html

VicRoads are changing the rule for 4X4 vehicles too 50mm. If you ring and talk to them, you can get an exclusion from the current rule to the new rule. My Father in Law wanted to fit 265/70R17 to the prado, and this would be outside the 15mm. So he wrote a letter to Vicroads detailing the situation that he wants to do central australia and standard styres will not stand-up, and got a response with permission to fit these tyres. I'll find a copy of the letter if you want.

I wasnt too worried about the men in blue/gray when I upgraded the D2 to 265/70/16s. On one view of things because different tyres manufacturers use considerably different acutal sizes - eg a 245/70/16 in one can be much smaller than another brand in the same nominal size. So if you use the largest eg in 245 and smallest actual eg in 265 you might just sneak under the 15mm mark...I doubt the police would really care and its all just too hard to prove anyway. The bottom line is that they dont look stupid under an unlifted D2 with a bullbar.
I was more concerned about my insurance policy. So I sent a letter to the underwriting manager and told him about my upgrade to 265/70/16 ATs and he has noted the policy accordingly.
Under the Insurance Contracts Act the insurer can only reduce its liability in the case here of property damage to the extent that the breach contributed to the loss...so for example if you were sitting at lights and were impacted from behind by another vehicle, it wouldnt matter that you had bald tyres or big tyres. The insurers would be more worried about braking reduction. My view now is that my insurer has now insured my vehicle knowing about the large tyres.
Cheers
What is the largest tyre size i could fit to my D2 with out lifting it atm there is 225/75/R16 on the front and 235/70/R16 on the back would i be able to fit 265/75/R16 Cooper st on it or have to go for the 245/75/R16
Thanks
Rob
mate "discoweb.org" has a good tyre tips page. I think from memory 265/75/16 is just too big...thats a pretty tall tyre by Disco stock standards. My 265/70/16s are about the biggest that I reckon would fit my truck without a lift.
Cheers
