Thread: Series 1 Gulf spec

There will be a silver/white sticker under the bonnet on the slam panel. It says "GULF SPEC- do not remove this label".
Does your Discovery have any other identifications ie. FXi etc?

Obviously it will be a left hand drive. Later Discos had the Gulf Campaign air conditioning and cooling upgrade done. larger fan, bigger rad, higher output alternator and the now infamous 'Saudi Spec' Grill as it's been nick named.

you cant drop a clanger like that and not back it up with a PIC,,,,

I'm just trying to expand my Land rover knowladge and understand what other posts are talking about.

A Lot more time than you'd think actually. My Discovery was one of the early testing cars for the Gulf Campaigne grill. Designed by Patrick Fay (the in-market testing manager for Land Rover Middle East) lessons learnt from this up-grade were later utterlised in both the series II Disco's and the P38 Rangies production models.

The upgrades needed are to change the radiator to a larger capacity one, bigger twin fans, larger output 120ACR alternator, alot of additional plastic panels that fit behind the grill to divert 100% of the incoming air through the radiator, longer serpentine belt, hairbrush oil cooler for the transmission.

I ran mine for a few months under hot weather and desert conditions before providing feedback to Land Rover in Saudi. It was a free upgrade to anyone with a late model 300 series Discovery.
The grills are quite rare now and many people want them for their looks alone without even having the other benefits of the entire kit.

We must be talking about different grills. Mine is a piece of chicken wire which hasn't stood the test of time very well. Patrick Fay must have been a contractor, and convinced his boss he'd spent ages on it, just to get some extra hours on his timesheet.
