    Hypoid 80w90 for D1?

Hi Everyone, was given some Penrite Hypoid 80-90 for the D1. It is time to change the diff and gearbox and transfer case oils so was wondering if this stuff will do the job? It's the R380 box.

I haven't found anything which makes me sure I can put it in so I was going to ask your opinions here before I do it.

I am pretty sure putting it in the axles is fine but I'm not sure about the gearbox due to the pump and the transfer case.

Please note: I did do a huge search on the R380 box and got tons of hits and read more then a dozen threads but I just don't want to make a mistake as I'm going bush alone in a week and can't risk things going bang due to not asking this question.

    Thanks,
    Xavier.

It will be fine for the diffs and transfer case. Do NOT put it in the gearbox! Use Castrol Syntrans for the R380.

You will need to find a Castrol distributor. Then you will probably have to buy 20l of the stuff.

Lol. I can't afford that currently. I will try just for a couple of bottles of the 1 litre lot first and then I might buy a 20 litre to do diffs and all with next time.

I use Castrol VMX80 in the R380 gearbox up in Brisbane. Seems fine. Castrol Syntrans costs a fortune. This is the reason you probably won't find it in Supercheap etc.

Castrol EPX 80w/90 in the transfer, diffs, swivels and wheel bearings.

You should not really be using a Hypoid oil in the transfer case. Use gearbox oil.

Castrol Syntrans or (the more expensive) Syntrax is available in 1L bottles and you need 3 of them.

As an aside Syntrax is the one recommended for the post 07-Defender.

uh oh....... Transfer case already has hypoid in it. If it is that terrible let me know and I'll just drain it. At least it will be nice and clean.

Gearbox- I have Syntrans to put in it.
