OK, i'm new to this site, so please be gentle with me

    I have a '93. 3.9 Dscovery with about 300K klm on it.
It has a rebuilt gearbox that whines annoyingly, a 10 year old John Davis chip, 2 1/4 stainless exhaust, Ulitmate suspension with Bilstein shocks, bull bar tow bar etc.
It has rust under each rear guard, the tailgate sill, and is appearing around the alpine windows.
It no longer holds its wheel alignment for long, although i'm told be mechanics that there is no mechanical problem to be found.

    Question.
Is the rust in these areas conquerable or will I simply chase my tail trying?

If not worth the effort, I would like to update to a TD5 or similar V8.
My enquiry here is whether the diesel would be better for towing a trailer with up to a Tonne in it, or if the V8 with some work such as a Haltech and LPG would be a better choice. I'm sure the gassed option would be the cheaper to run.
I have some reservations re the TD5 following being warned off by a local Rover specialist, but there seems to be a lot of support for them on this site.

I use the vehicle for camping, surfing, hunting and fishing.

    Welcome,

You should be able to sort the rust out if you want to. The hardest thing will be the stuff around the alpine windows in my opinion. How bad is it under the guards?

I would say the TD5 will be better for towing than the V8 but both will be fine.

    TD5 is an excellent engine.

LPG'd V8 will probably end up being cheaper to run and will be cheaper to buy too.

    good luck.
    Pete.

The 3.9 V8 is not bad at all for towing, but the 4.0 has more usable torque and is a better tow motor in my opinion - certainly for 2 tonns that i regularly tow.

    Cheers

A TD5 will just laugh at towing a tonne. You'll hardly even know you're pulling it around behind you.

    Welcome Beerdead (from the Hunter!!!)

no matter what you spend on it, it'll still be worth the same as it is now.

Its all fixable, just depends if you want a 15 year old car, or a younger model.

I'm quite fond of the '93 model

drive it right and dont expect it to go like a semi and the td5 will tow 4t with a full load on the rover Ive done it before I'll do it again. (and Ive since been remapped for some fairly major power increases)

the rust in the 93 is fixable but you want to get it perfect on the first run or your going to chase your tail all over the thing. pay attention to the floor pan at the back under the carpets while your at it.

Thanks for the replies and welcome

I would prefer to keep it given the economy (share market, not the disco) and having set it up reasonably close to need/want. I just don't need to spend 2-3 grand on it every year, which I have been. After a few years it becomes a false economy, comparative to the purchase price of a replacement vehicle.

The plus side of a replacement is more internal room, and less mileage on the replacement vehicle. That makes it a more sensible option to tinker with the mapping for a more reasonable economy (there's that word again. A contradiction in terms to a V8 Disco), and not losing the gains in a worn out vehicle.

I'll do what I usually do. Deliberate for 2 years then make a spontaneous and unrelated decision.

    Regards
    Beerdead
