    D1 starting probs...NO spider

Hi all, new to this and have spent hours reading posts.
I have a 97 V8i (built 96) Disco which every now and then will not start, no cranking. When Ive been stuck on the side of the road I have got it to crank and start by shorting the starter motor connections.

It only happens when on very hot days, and almost always when I have the aircon turned on. I reckon it has something to do with the immobiliser as the normal "click" from an underdash relay when you press the keyfob (2 button) is not heard when the problem occurs. I have also noticed when the car wont start sometimes the tacho is dead also and the temp gauge does not fully register. I have stripped out the centre dash to do the "spider" bypass mod and there is no spider unit fitted, there is no trace of one ever being there either....obviously due to the problem occuring with heat I suspect a dry solder joint/connection somewhere, although the tacho/gauge problem has the hallmarks of a crook earth...any ideas where to start? Thanks

If you have an OEM alarm, the starting cicuit also passes through the alarm ECU. This is a green box mounted above the front passenger kick panel.
However from the symptoms you describe sounds like a crook earth to me.

Check the earth lead from the battery. Take it off clean both ends and where it mates to the chassis/motor. It's a simple thing to do and has caused issues in the past. Good luck with it.

Agree with all of the above and for the most annoying and least expected solution of all......

#3 son's 97 tdi auto had a start problem on the GRR last month. Turned out to be a faulty ignition/starter switch. Simple solution and easy to replace.

Mine does exactly the same, 99% of the time it works, but when you really need it to start it wont. No click no nothing.

On mine there was an aftermarket alarm fitted a year after it was built, so I was assuming that was the problem and I've been intending on ripping it out.

Checked all the usual culprits, nothing to be seen.

Strange thing is I've found that if I'm on a hill and put it in gear and roll forwards with the clutch out something clunks and I can start it again... Don't have a clue why but it does

Check the connections on the fuse box as well - in fact check all of the connections on the starter circuit. The auto sparky found the fuse box was the problem on mine,

Had the same problem with my 98 model. I ended up not starting at all one day. I went to Ritters and bought a new starter (denso I think, not original). I had the old one reconditioned for 150 bucks just in case I needed it. When I reinstalled it I fitted a relay to it and have had no troubles since.

Starter will be on it's way out and drawing more current than what it should be.

It will normally do it when it's hot as they get a bit of mud and crap in them and this retains heat and makes connections high in resistance.

You can fit a relay which will only take the bulk of the current away from the ignition switch, and I would do that for starters as it will save your ignition switch but it wont fix your problem.

You need to pull the starter out and have it reco'd or reco it yourself which will require brushes, bearings and a good clean up mainly.

Maybe replace the solenoid which will probably be the main problem.

Ok so before doing anything, make sure you clean all connections, then fit the relay so the ign switch operates the switching and the feed supplies the solenoid then if that fails pull the starter and reco it.
