    Question What to look-out for?

We are looking to get a Disco (pref diesel). Is there anything that we should watch out for.
    Is there a preferred model?
We are hoping to spend around the $7000, and we need the 7 seats, (do they all face inwards?)
    Thanks

We own two 1992 200tdi diesels apart from afew miner isues they are a great buy for the price they go for , but i would try find one with low kms, good clutch and gearbox (if you go a manual) and a good service history.

If you want to go a bit newer i would go for the updated 300tdi modal around the 1998 mark and once again just look for one with low kms and that has been well looked after.

I have a Tdi 200 diesel with 455,000 k's on it. Motor and gearbox has been rebuilt. It's cheap to run and reliable.

See if you can get one with the service history. As long as it's been well maintained you should be fine. I had an RACV check done on mine before I bought it and although they didn't find much wrong with it I considered it money well spent.

7 seats with the two in the boot folding up out of the way to leave a good load space. Good luck in your search, they are a great vehicle.

There's a lot of old threads on this forum on what to look for when buying a D1. There's a few common things to watch for. Rather than us typing it all out again, maybe try a search.

I would look out for the loud rattle on a diesel and black smoke never a good sign.

    See how it drives.

If not sure, drive a Nissan or Cruiser of same vintage and you will know why we love our Landies.

Get it checked whatever you do.
Not sure where you live, but some detail on that would help us help you.

On here are always some good discos for sale.

    Good luck.

    Have found one.
Bought a 1994 TDi off ebay - never done that before!
At $3500 could no pass-up. It is only 5 seats, so the hunt is on for the 3rd row seats - at a budget price. I've heard that LR will sell them new for over twice the price I paid for the car.
I guess there are a lot of other little things that need repair, but as far as I can tell, they are mostly aesthetic.

Good choice mate, they are a top truck.

I personally would go a diesel aswell, but i am biased. Both the petrol and the diesel have their pros and cons, and in the end it comes down to personal preference. What you save over time on the cheaper economy of the diesel you spend in repairs and parts as things wear out, diesel bits cost alot more than petrol engine bits as a fair rule.

But the 200Tdi diesel which will most likely be the one you end up with on that budget is a good uni, more reliable than the 300Tdi some would say. Its a bit more agricultural than the 300Tdi, they refined the 300Tdi a bit so its a bit quieter, due largely to a big rubber sound deadner they put on the motor.

Other than the usual stuff just make sure the body is good, no rust etc.

With the age of vehicle you will be looking at unless there has been extensive work done there will be slack in the drive train so there will be clunks etc when you take off, but unless things are totally flogged out this isnt a major issue, just be aware that early 90's discos are 15 odd years old so they wont drive like a new one.

Check the engine over thouroughly, a service history would be nice but gets harder to obtain as a vehicle gets older. and make sure the timing belt has been changed recently. every 80000km or so it the interval, some say 60000km as a precautionary measure. If it hasnt been done of the person cant prove that it has been done then get it done.

    Congratulations!!

I have had mine for about 6 mths now and have had next to no trouble with it. I do about 1000k's a week and change the oil myself between 7500 - 10,000 k's.

If there is a noticeable clunk when accelerating it's the ball joint on the chasis where the rear suspension is attached. Can be alarming if you are not used to it. Cheep and easy to fix.

I agree get it checked out by someone who knows what they are looking at. But I love mine. It's a keeper.

Hope all goes well for you.

    Jay
