Awww... It's a labour of love... You should post some pics of the disco mate.
Hi,
I have a 93 Disco 1 Tdi 200. I paid over the odds for it because the guy before me had rebuilt the engine and gearbox. Also because it runs on diesel and lpg and is very economical. I had a V8 Disco 3.5l for about 10 years and loved it but the petrol was a killer. It's a manual and swmbo hates that.
It has 454,000 k's on the clock. I take pretty good care of her. Mechanically she is good especially for that age and K's however he hadn't done much to the interior.
I really enjoy fixing her back up. I have picked up from wreckers the centre console, ashtrays and bits and pieces that were missing. Put an alarm on it, 4 new tyres and replaced shockers and steering rubber bits. Replaced the indicator stalk with one from ebay uk and expected that to not only fix the indicator not sticking on (it did) but also the intermittent horn not working. Unfortunately still stuffed. Must be the wiring or the horn itself.
My latest upgrade has given me the most pleasure though. I bought two front seats from ebay for $20 each and got them recovered at an upholsterer. Last weekend I pulled out the old torn crappy seats and fitted my brand new recovered ones and boy does she look good. I even sit a bit higher up as they were repadded as well.
How good is this, I drive a car I love, get to play with it at the weekend and it's economical to run with cheap spares off ebay.
Happy chappy !
Martin

How do you find the gas and Diesel. I'm thinking of getting a disco TD5 and getting gas.
It's people like you that make me want one more. Thank you....
Thanks, I just love the look of them and there's plenty of room and they are easy to work on compared to the modern plug in a computer cars.
I bought her in Feb 2008 with 438,000 k's. I have run it on diesel and gas or biodiesel and gas which is even cheaper. They sell biodiesel in Thomastown, Melbourne around 20-30c a litre cheaper.
No issues apart from more power and better fuel economy. I would definitely get it done again. The lpg tank is only very small, sits under the front passenger floor and has never cost me more than $10 to fill up. Holds 15 litres I think and I usually get 700k around town and 850-900k to a tankful on mixed driving.
I suspect I am filling the diesel early as I usually top it up as soon as the light comes on and usually put in around 60 litres of diesel. I think I have read on here that the D1 tank holds 80 litres but I don't want to risk sucking up all the crap in the dregs of the fueltank.
Good luck with your hunt, go for it, they are great vehicles.
Regards
Martin
Glad you are enjoying your pride and joy.I have a spare car if you need some bit's and pieces
Thanks a lot Brett, I'll bear that in mind.
Hi Martin;
what's that thing on the console with Blue lights ??
glad you're enjoying your disco mate , what sort of fuel economy are you getting from Diesel gas.
I have several little toys. A bluetooth handsfree car kit. An FM transmitter that can play the mp3 player or Blackberry mp3's through the radio and a Blackberry charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter extension (1 input and three outputs to power all this). I also run a cheapo combined fridge/heater that swmbo bought me from Target or Safeway for $80 that works quite well.
With regards to economy, I have literally just topped it up and got 602km's for 52 litres of diesel. By my calcs (I'd check if I was you)that's 11.58 km's per litre or 8.64 liters/100km. That was mostly city running maybe 150k of freeway. On top of that I also topped up the lpg but at $5.66 I don't even bother adding it to the calc. Let's call it a rounding error.
Very happy with that, also unlike my trusty old V8 Disco I only need to top up once a fortnight rather than weekly. Did I mention I am VERY happy.![]()
