Has anyone done a 3.9 conversion in a D1. My thoughts are an Isuzu turbo diesel with an auto behind it. With maxi axles and detroit in the rear and longfields front axles and CV's is it a possibility?
I can't see why not, I know it won't be a simple swap but i'd like to know if anyone has done it? Can anyone give me any pointers?
This will be my project for an Xmas 2009 finish.

Thanks guys, I was thinking auto as I thoughtthat the 3.9 was hard on R380's
Sounds like an interesting project Sean.
Why not get one of the 2.8L powerstroke Tdi's from the UK, someone on here was bringing them in. They were 10k but by the time you muck around sorting out how everything will fit with the Izuzu find a good one, get all the accessories make it fit etc etc buying the 2.8L Powerstroke doesnt seem so bad for the money. I think thats what i will aim to bolt in the disco in the future when the current motor expires.
But the Izuzu is a top engine and sometimes the not so easy option is the most fun, im keen to see how it unfolds. Matt

Because they dont make them anymore, they came in from Brazil and it was Jase that was bringing them in.
You could work the crap out of a 300Tdi, fit a VVT and have the pump tuned, maybe some exaust work and intake work (bigger intercooler and better pipe work) and you will have change as well as it is all made to fit (other than the turbo).
I think if you were to sink $10k into modding up a 300Tdi you will end up with a pretty good set up and will be far better than an Isuzu or 2.8 as it is still going to be set up for the vehicle and not a truck motor shoe horned in or a motor that was never actually available in Australia and will get more and more difficult to get parts for in the future.
Im not knocking the 4BD1t or the 2.8 but for the money that is what I would do.

I'm doing it now - or started about a month ago..
Its a '91 V8 to 4BD1-T and Isuzu 5 speed. So far the vehicle is stripped and mounts welded in - waiting for the engineer to have a look at them. I understand the 4BD1(t) is Euro 3 emission compliant which takes it to 1993 from memory, so I'm not sure if that would be approved in a '95 chassis.
Suitable auto's might be diffcult beyond a GM turbo 350/400. Maybe a TH-700 could work but I think they're an electronic shift? I'm keeping it simpleby using a 5 speed.
The overall length is the same as the LT-77 combo (except the rear shaft in mine because I've fitted a 'Salisbury' from a '96 Defender.
The Disco needs a 2.5" body lift too in order to close the bonnet - I'm not a fan of lift kits but it was that or crush the sump with the front diff. If I can help further, let me know - oh, and it's a lot more expensive than I planned for...... as per usual.
Have a look at www.4btswaps.com - they have a link to Isuzu's and some blokes jabber on about auto's behind them. Lot's of useful stuff and Dougal is a moderator too!
Hi guys, soory for the slow reply, I haven't been online much lately. Too much to do.
Thanks for the links etc. I'll have to have a look when I get a bit of time![]()
