    D1 Almost Getting Hot

I have been running my 1995 D1 (dual fuel V8) without the bullbar on for a while because I broke it.

While the bullbar was off the temp on the after market gauge I have was reading about 80 degrees. I have now refitted the bullbar and the temp seems to have gone up between 5 and 10 degrees. The difference has been in the cool morning as well as in the warmer afternoon. The oem temp gauge hasn't moved past about 1/4 for the last couple of years (even though it overheated -the result of which is the extra gauge among other things).

It looks like the bullbar may be obstructing too much of the air flow into the radiator. Has anybody else had this problem and what did you do?

I am thinking of possibly putting vents in the bonnet or getting a couple of cold air intakes form the wreckers and fitting them under the bullbar and directing the air into the radiator. I have also thought of heat shield wrap for around the headers(can you still get it?).

I also have a new secondhand clutch fan to fit which will be going on this weekend.

Only the thermo fan on the drivers side appears to come on - should the other side or is that something to do with the air-con (which I think I read here). I may hook the passenger side thermo to a switch in the cabin and manually switch it.

    Thanks
    Andrew

The electric fans only come on with the aircon or if the engine temp gets over a certain level (too hot).
Both fans should work in unison.

If I have read this right .... There is NO fan behind where the radiator sits ... located where the original Viscos (clutch) fan should be

You could try all those ideas you have mentioned .. which will most probably take days and add up to total frustration

    ...or ....

just put the original Viscos fan complete with it's cowling (plastic shroud) back where it belongs ... which will take 20 miniutes
complete with a beer in hand ... and she will reward you with no more hours of watching the temp gauge

    Better still...

    Bullbar off - Temp = 80c

    Bullbar on - Temp = 85-90c

Perfect operating range for the V8 is 88c

So I cant see what your issue is

I have a fan on at the moment - just doesn't seem to lock up.

I have an 82 thermostat in it and that is why I am a bit worried about the temp. So far I this year I have only driven it in very mild (25 degrees) conditions and I am concerned what will happen when I do drive it in high 30's or low 40's.

I will replace the viscous fan on the weekend and see how it goes from there.

    Thanks

    Had a similar problem

When I replaced the bumper with the bull bar the heat build up was extreme. It was too hot to put bare feet on the floor and on one long run we actually cooked a watermelon on the rear floor.

Someone suggested that the bull bar was not designed with an air dam, failing to create vacuum under the motor which in turn failed
to support drawn air through the radiator. Following this line of thought I installed a 3mm piece of aluminium checkerplate from the original mounting points of the bumper, to the protective bar in front of the steering tie rod. Works a treat. The motor now does not over heat and we can carry our watermelons uncooked.

Since then the radiator clagged and died, and I had it rebuilt with a 4 cored truck core. The galleries are about 4 times the volume of the original. The temp gauge does not move!

Both mods highly recomended and I would repeat them if I bought a similar vehicle.

I apologise for my lack of OT skills and not including a photo.

Before you start cutting holes, I suggest that you have the radiator dismantled and cleaned and if deemed necessary recored.
If the radiator is unable to hold temp on the highway, then it is very marginal.

This has nothing to do with the viscous fan. It will not lock up at those temps anyway and the ram air through the radiator is what cools at speed.

I had the radiator rodded (so they said) last year I think.

I have a second hand radiator I got of Ebay though so will have that cleaned/rodded and then install it.

It sat on about 85 for most of the trip today, but actually went down when I slowed down going into town(to about 75 or so).

I tried to change the viscous fan tonight couldn't get the *^$) off. The spanner I just got for it is the Ford 32mm and it doesn't fit it. It fits the replacement one perfectly. I was able to find the part number on the fan itself ( ERR3439 ). Now I am off to search for the old threads on the viscous fans.

    Thanks

Well I just worked out the 32mm spanner will only fit the non serpentine belt v8's and diesels.

I now have a viscous fan that looks to be in good order (with 32mm nut) if anybody is after one

I will pull the rad out on the weekend and try cleaning it myself first and fit a new thermostat, rad cap etc.

    Thanks

I was going to suggest taking the tanks off your radiator yourself, at least you then know what is inside it.

A dipstick from a truck can be handy tool to rod the tubes out, with lots of running water.

The difficulty in putting the tanks back on, is to have a large enough pickle bath to plunge the radiator into before attempting to solder; at that point it is probably easier to take it to a radiator specialist and ask them to do it,

    Cheers Charlie
