    New Member - 97 Discovery V8

    Afternoon all,

On Wednesday I picked up my 12/97 Discovery SE that I bought a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I have familiarised myself with this site - it is great!

My Discovery is a V8, comes with books, 5 x Alloys, RWC and it appears a nice clean thing - no rust, no damage, appears it has not been off road even though it has a near new color coded winch bar on it.

Excellent time to buy a V8 it seems - I won't tell you how much I paid - some may be dissapointed with the resale!

Mine does have its share of glitches - Cruise isn't working (am filtering through the many threads on this site) and the central locking is... temperamental at best... - again, lots of information here.

More annoying is the gearbox - the spring is supposed to settle the gear stick mid range under 3rd/above 4th, but it springs it all the way to the left, so finding 3rd was interesting to begin with...

I am in Ballarat, and was blown away when I realised Rover parts is about 4 minutes from my house - I think they and I will be come good friends!

Again, congrats on this site - very informative

Hope my pic works.... sorry its BIG! Cheers, David

    Hi Welcome

Had same problem with cruise control.
Bought a new 2nd hand switch from TRS in Adelaide for $20.00.
    Great.

Neat looking example.I am in Colac if you are ever down this way for a drive let me now.I also have a spare car for parts if you need anything just pm me.
Door locks are all the same and cruise is another common problem.
    Good luck and enjoy it

The cruise control tricked me, I didn't realise that you have to lift the button instead of pressing it.

    Thanks all.

    I have found heaps of information about the cruise on here, but have one question;
At speed, say 80km, when you press the cruise master button, does it turn orange before or after you have set the speed?

Mine won't turn orange at all, yet I can hear the relay under the dash, so am trying to eliminate things as I go.

Once this rain clears up, I will wash my car and get another pic - it looks ace once it's clean...

I just bought a 1997 SE7 myself, and to answer your question the cruise master button should glow orange as soon as you push it. (may just be a burnt out globe though)

Hi David, l have also recently bought a 97 SE pet/gas and love it with all it's little faults. Also found problem with cruise control but easily fixed (vacuum hose damaged) Lots of other small annoying things relating to door locks etc but the most frustrating is OVERHEATING when pulling our caravan up a long hill. OK in general travel but a seriously long hill brings up the temp guage and results in a roadside cooldown period. I'd be interested to hear if tou have a similar problem. I'm not too sure how to use this site. Brian

You either need to replace the bias plate or left hand bias spring. The plate and springs are very cheap parts - even from a dealer.

Its an easy job - just a little time consuming. It involves removing the centre console and drilling out about 12 rivets that hold a rubber splash cover over the top of the gear box and then re-riveting it back in place.

Good news on a couple of points, Cruise button fixed (burnt out globe), cruise was being dicey, doused the set/resume buttons in WD40 - working just fine.
Door springs are ordered (I wish the Oz dollar was still at 98c!) and my fuel economy is coming in at under 12l per 100km - so all in all I am really happy.

I have no overheating problems, but haven't towed anything yet.

    Thanks guys for the advise.

I have washed the thing, so will get some more pics up soon - looks pretty decent when she's clean!
