    reconnecting handbrake cable 97 D1

Took my centre console off today to install some 12V outlets, and disconected the handbrake cable from the lever. Now I can't seem to fit the cable back through the lever to reconnect it using the pin. Any tips or tricks to get it reconnected?

    Keithy47,
They are difficult to reattach It helps to back off the adjustment a little, then readjust after lever pin is back in. This is done by turning the black plastic knurled ring under the circlip where the cable goes down through the floor clockwise. This SHORTENS the cable outer, thereby allowing more cable to come up through the floor. Obviously, tightening the cable afterwards is a anticlockwise rotation, LENGTHENING the cable outer.

Well i figured out the problem i was having was the ratched had moved over centre when i took it out, blocking the hole for the pin. I've reset it and re attached the cable but now it doesn't seem to be ratcheting properly, and after i push the button in on the lever, it doesn't seem to reset.

Did you force it slightly? The rod that goes down to the ratchet arm can easily get bent and binds in the tube. Also, there is a little spring in there, is it still there?

I may have forced it a little but the rod still looks straight. Also can't see any springs

    Fixed
Removed the button on the handbrake and moved the rod around a bit using a pair of pliers, seems to be fine now
